
ROANOKE, Va. -- Six wrestlers from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competed at the 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, March 10-11, at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
Olivet College junior Donovan King earned All-American status for the second-straight year after finishing fifth in the heavyweight competition. King posted a 3-0 record on Friday, earning wins against Nate DeGroff from Rochester Institute of Technology (pin - 1:05), Greensboro's Brandon Williams (6-3), and No. 7 seed Evan Anderson from New York University (pin - 1:38). King was pinned by No. 3 seed Kaleb Reeves in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, King was pinned by Dubuque's Darryl Aiello and then won 9-2 against Southern Maine's Jake Peavy to clinch fifth place.
Adrian College was represented by four wrestlers at the national competition: Graduate student Zach Altman at 165, graduate student Derick Duvall at 174, sophomore Blake Williams at 184, and senior Dylan Wellbaum at 197. Altman and Duvall both finished 0-2, with Altman falling to the fifth-seeded wrestler in the first round. Williams lost his first match but won his first match in the consolation bracket with a pin within two minutes. He lost by major decision against the fourth-seeded wrestler. Wellbaum won by an 8-4 decision in the first round but fell to the No. 6 seed in the next round. In the consolation bracket, Wellbaum won 7-4 to advance but fell to the fifth-seeded wrestler.
At 125 pounds, freshman Cade Odrobina of Albion College went 0-2 on Friday.
