Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian went 2-2 at its own Bulldogs Duals on Saturday when they routed Fontbonne and Penn State-Behrend, 46-0 and 53-0, respectively, before falling in a couple heartbreakers to UW-Stevens Point, 22-21, and Central (Iowa), 23-16… Juniors Noah Nieman (149 pounds) and Devon Pingel (197) as well as sophomore Isaiah Espinoza (285) paced Adrian all with 4-0 records during the event… Pingel, who is ranked ninth in Division III at 197 pounds by the National Wrestling Coaches' Association, recorded two falls, including his second bout against Jutin Chaudhary of PSU-Behrend in just 11 seconds…Espinoza began the day with two pins and won the Bulldogs' last bout of the event with a 3-1 sudden-victory over Duncan Lee from Central…Nieman dominated his opponents with two technical falls, a fall and a major decision…in the D3wrestle.com rankings, Pingel is No. 7, Nieman is No. 21 (honorable mention), 174-pound junior Bryant Moore is No. 20 (honorable mention) and Espinoza is No. 20 (honorable mention)….Adrian hits the mat again on Thursday against non-conference opponent Manchester at home on Paul MacDonald Night, the former coach who led the Bulldogs to three MIAA championships from 1969 to 1971.


No. 14 Alma

The wrestling team defeated Penn State Behrend, 55-0, and Milwaukee School of Engineering, 48-3, while falling to Central College, 21-20, and University of UW-Stevens Point, 24-19, at the Adrian College Duals on Saturday (Nov. 16). Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich.) and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich.) both went 4-0 on the day. Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich.), Matt Tomsett (Madison Heights, Mich.), and Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas) each earned wins against Central. Zachariah Kelley (Freeport, Mich.) and Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich.) got in the win column against UW-Stevens Point.


Olivet

Owen Miller's championship in the 285-pound bracket led the Olivet wrestling team at the unscored Trine Invitational. Miller repeated as the champion, and ironically won the championship match for a second straight year over the same the wrestler, and by an identical 8-point margin. In addition to Miller, junior Dylan Briggs placed second in the 165-pound bracket with a 3-1 record. Senior Nicholas Worden was second in the 174-pound bracket with a 4-1 record. Freshman Owen Guilford at 174 pounds and senior Jalen McFerrin-Pace at 197 pounds finished in third-place. Olivet is back in action Saturday when it hosts the 2019 Duals. Ten other schools will competing in four rounds of dual matches. Olivet faces Mount St. Joseph (Ohio), Millikin (Ill.), Ohio Northern and Heidelberg (Ohio).


Trine

The Thunder hosted the unscored Trine Invitational at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola, Ind. Highlighting the day was a second-place finish by junior Riley Rasler (LaGrange, Ind.) in the 157-pound bracket. Rasler won his first three bouts all by technical fall.
