Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian College finished in fifth place at the 11-school Mid-States Conference Invitational in Crawfordsville, Ind., at Wabash College, where the Bulldogs had 87.5 points… junior Donald Moses III was the 197-pound champion at 5-0 and, as a result, earned his first-ever MIAA Player of the Week award…the Bulldogs had 12 placers at MSC, including junior Michael Jacobs who was fourth at 197 with a 5-2 record, and runners-up sophomore Spencer Sillman (165) and freshman Coleton Wiegers (141)…Adrian has made program history with a 12-win season (12-5)… the 1970 and 1969 AC squads went 11-4-1 and 11-6, respectively, according to available school files…junior Devon Pingel (197) is nationally ranked No. 5 by D3wrestle.com and No. 7 by the National Wrestling Coaches' Association, and has a team-best 12 falls with a 25-3 record on the season… sophomore Isaiah Espinoza (285) has a Bulldog-best record of 27-3 with 10 falls and is ranked No. 4 by D3wrestle and No. 8 by NWCA… The Bulldogs will host the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29.


Alma

The wrestling team competed at the Mid-States Invitational Saturday (Feb. 15). Nine Scots placed and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) won the 149 weight class. Chase Beecher (Clio, Mich. / Clio), Zachariah Kelley (Freeport, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg), and Nicholas Dawson (Gladstone, Mich. / Gladstone Area) all placed in the 125 weight class. Beecher placed second. After a first round bye, he went on to win two matches by decision to advance to the championship. Kelley also had a first round bye and won his first match of the day by pinfall in 4:00. He wrestled his way to the third place match that he won by decision 8-5. Dawson lost his first match of the day but responded with a win by pinfall in 3:18. He would finish the tournament in fifth place.


No. 18/18 Olivet

Using an entire team of backup wrestlers, Olivet finished in second-place at the Mid-States Invitational. Sophomore Owen Miller had a 3-0 record to win the 285-pound title. Senior Nicholas Worden was second in the 184-pound bracket. Sophomore Austin Engle placed third at 197 pounds. Freshman Jeff Leach was fourth at 141 pounds. Freshman Jarrett Thorne finished fourth at 149 pounds. Senior Garret Cleveland and freshman Zach Wells placed sixth at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. The starting 10 Comets now focus on the 2020 NCAA Division III Central Regional Feb. 28-29 at Adrian College. The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the 2020 NCAA Division III Championships March 12-13 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.


Trine

Lost to Manchester (L, 27-23) in final dual meet of season and was ninth of 11 teams at annual Mid-States Invitational...Luke Carver and Matt Abraham both recorded pins in their respective matches against Manchester...Riley Rasler was the highest finisher for Trine at the Mid-States Invitational with a third-place effort at 149 pounds with a 5-1 record on the day that included a pair of tech falls and a pin.
