Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian had a historic win versus MIAA rival Alma on Thursday, coming from behind to defeat the Scots, 27-21, for the Bulldogs first in the modern era (since 2015-16) and in the series since 1980-81 season…Adrian, which is 10-5 in duals, reaches double-digit victories for the first time since 1970 when it finished 11-4-1 overall…Adrian trailed Alma 21-13, but won the last three bouts to take the win…sophomore Elijah Sanchez sparked the rally with a pin in 5:34 at 133 after trailing 12-1 after the first period… a pin in 28 seconds by junior Devon Pingel at 197 gave Adrian its first lead at 24-2…285- sophomore Isaiah Espinoza clinched the team win with a 7-4 decision to account for the final six-point margin…Adrian can secure a share of the MIAA championship with a win over visiting Trine on Thursday and an Alma triumph against Olivet… Espinoza is nationally-ranked No. 4 by D3wrestle.com...Pingel is No. 7 by D3wrestle.com and No. 9 by InterMat & National Wrestling Coaches' Association...Nieman is listed on D3wrestle as "honorable mention" or No. 20...Espinoza leads Adrian with a 24-1 record while Pingel breaks a tie with Espinoza for an AC-best 11 pins among a 22-2 mark.


Alma

The Alma College wrestling team traveled to Adrian College Thursday (Jan. 16) for their second conference dual of the year. After leading for the majority of the dual, the Scots fell, 27-21. Both Alma and Adrian move to 1-1 in conference. Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich.), Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich.), Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich.), and Lucas Brewer (Belleville, Mich.) all won their matches. Alma also hosted the Alma open, where Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich.) placed fourth and Lucas Brewer (Belleville, Mich.) sixth in the 174 weight class.


No. 16 Olivet

Olivet, ranked No. 16 in the most recent NWCA poll, won 9-of-10 bouts to easily beat Trine (Ind.), 38-6. Olivet scored bonus points in six of the wins, including pins by senior Drew Mandell at 149 pounds (33 seconds) and junior Cole Hersch at 157 pounds (4:02). Olivet then sent a mix of varsity and backup wrestlers to compete at the Alma College Open. Eight wrestlers finished in the top eight of the respective weight class, led by freshman Owen Guilford's 4-0 record and championship in the 165-pound bracket. Finishing with a 3-1 record and the runner-up was senior Nicholas Worden at 174 pounds. Olivet hosts Alma College Thursday night. With a win, the Comets would secure their second straight outright MIAA title and the 12th in school history.


Trine

Lost to Olivet (38-6) in team's only meet of the week...Luke Carver scored the six team points with a pin against Olivet's Kamyab Kamali in a time of 57 seconds.
