Olivet Wins 2019 MIAA Wrestling Championship

The Olivet wrestling team won six of 10 bouts, including three bonus-point victories, to defeat Adrian 23-12 Feb. 1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association season finale for both teams. With the win, Olivet finished a perfect 3-0 MIAA season to claim the 2019 MIAA Championship.

The MIAA Championship is the first honored by the conference since 1984. Olivet, ranked No. 15 nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, has now won 11 MIAA Championships all-time in wrestling.

After Adrian (7-3, 1-2) tied the match at 6-6 on a decision by Noah Nieman, Olivet won the next three bouts, all by bonus point, to take a 20-9 lead; Cole Hersch (157 lbs., major decision), Tyler Grimsley (165 lbs., pin), and Hayden Kinjorski (174 lbs., major decision) bolstered the Comets.

Jacob Harvey (197 lbs.), Reese Wallis (133 lbs.), and Andrew Castaneda (141 lbs.) also added wins for Olivet.

With their wins, Wallis, Hersch, Grimsley, Kinjorski, and Harvey all finished the MIAA season with 3-0 bout records.

Trine will take on Alma Thursday, Feb. 7, to conclude the 2019 MIAA season; the MIAA will announce all-MIAA selections following the conclusion of the regular season.
