The No. 2-seeded Hope College women's basketball team upset first-seeded Trine University for the 2022 MIAA Tournament crown after edging the Thunder, 54-50, in the battle between nationally-ranked teams at the MTI Center on February 26.
Hope has an overall record of 26-1, including a 15-1 mark in conference contests.
The Flying Dutch were led by Sydney Muller and Ella McKinney, who both scored in double digits with 15 points and 13 points, respectively. Muller earned a double-double with also grabbing a game-best 11 boards. She also contributed four steals, while Olivia Voskuil blocked a game-best five shots.
Hope totaled 34 rebounds, 11 steals, seven assists, and seven blocks.
Tara Bieniewicz led the Thunder with a game high of 17 points, including four triples and three free throws. Kelsy Taylor and Sam Underhill each grabbed five rebounds. Katie Sloneker dished out a game-best four helpers, while Rachel Stewart led the squad with four steals and two blocks.
Trine finished with 34 rebounds, nine assists, seven steals, and 11-of-14 (.786) made free-throw attempts.
Hope receives the league's automatic bid into the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament. The championship selection show will be live streamed at NCAA.com on Monday, February 28, at 2:30 p.m. ET.
