Hope Perfect in Pursuit of MIAA Women's Basketball Title

In a close contest between two Top 25 teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season finale Saturday, the Hope women's basketball team wrapped up an unblemished MIAA season with a 59-52 over Trine at DeVos Fieldhouse in front of 2,079 fans - the most for an NCAA Division III women's basketball contest this season.

 

Hope, ranked second nationally by d3hoops.com and the WBCA, went 25-0 during the regular season and 16-0 in MIAA play. Trine, ranked No. 23 by the WBCA, concluded the MIAA season with a 14-2 mark and 20-5 overall. The game featured the top two team defenses in the nation: Hope ranked first prior to the game with 41.1 points per game, Trine second with 45.3 points per game.

Hope's Kenedy Schoonveld led Hope with 14 points, including 10 points in the second half. Hope committed just 11 turnovers as a team, and forced Trine - a team averaging just 12.5 miscues a game - into 20 turnovers on Saturday.

Hope will be the top seed in the upcoming 2020 MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament Feb. 26, 28, and 29, where the winner will receive an automatic berth into the 2020 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. Hope, the host for Friday's semifinals and Saturday's final, will enter the tournament at the semifinal round Friday, Feb. 28; Trine also will have a first-round bye.
