Trine Wins Third-Consecutive MIAA Softball Tournament Championship

ANGOLA, Ind. -- Trine University won its tenth Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Softball Tournament title in program history after going 3-0 over the two-day event.

On Friday, May 10, the Thunder opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded Adrian College.  Debbie Hill put Trine on the board with a run at the bottom of the second inning.  Pitcher Alexis Michon totaled nine strikeouts in the five innings that she pitched.  Both Macie Schang and Abbi Patton struck out two batters each for the Bulldogs.

Trine kept its second game to five innings with a 17-1 victory over Calvin University.  Karley Trine and Ainsley Phillips each led the Thunder with three runs, including a home run by Trine, while pitcher Lauren Clausen totaled six strikeouts.  Emilie Gist scored the lone run for the Knights.

The Thunder closed out the tournament with a 4-3 edge over Calvin.  Tyra Marcum led Trine with two runs and Michon struck out eight batters.  Carly Dole, Emily Sweetland, and Emma Walker each scored a run for the Knights. 

Trine receives the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.  The softball championship field will be announced during the selection show on Monday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m.
