Trine Softball Concludes Season at NCAA Championships

The Trine softball team saw their 2017 season come to a conclusion at the 2017 NCAA Division III Softball Championships at Oklahoma City. The Thunder came up short in extra innings in their opening contest against Amherst, 4-3, and then were eliminated by Virginia Wesleyan May 26, 2-0.

Against Amherst May 25, both teams waited until extra innings to get on the board, but Amherst's four-run eighth was too much to overcome despite a three-run rally by Trine in the bottom half of the inning. Carly Bachna had a two-run single in the stanza, and then scored on an RBI single by Catherine Porter, but the Thunder could not overcome the deficit. Danielle Ray threw for 7 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts.

In their elimination game against Virginia Wesleyan Friday, the Thunder was held to just three hits in a 2-0 shutout. Virginia Wesleyan tallied twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to tally the game's lone runs. Trine's Catherine Porter had a one-out double in the second inning, but was unable to advance as Virginia Wesleyan's Hannah Hull struck out the side for two of her 10 strikeouts on the day. Danielle Ray took the loss to finish the year 18-5, despite five strikeouts.
