The Calvin men's cross country team match last season's scoring perfection with the first five individual finishes to win the 2019 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Cross Country Championship Saturday at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
It marked the 33rd consecutive championship for the Knights, and their ninth perfect score in program history; they are the only team in MIAA history to post a perfect score at the MIAAs.
Calvin's Jonathan Ellis improved on a third-place finish in 2018 to earn Most Valuable Runner honors this season in leading the 1-2-3-4-5 finish by the Knights; Ellis crossed the line in 26:02.7 on a water-logged 8K course. Three Calvin harriers joined Ellis as repeat top-five finishers from last fall: Tyler Johnson, Caleb Ferguson, and Justin Varineau. Sophomore Ryan Freeke finished the Calvin scoring with a fifth-place finish.
Along with this year's and last fall's scoring sweeps, Calvin also posted 15s in 1993, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2009.
Host Trine placed second overall with a score of 51; Albion and Hope tied for third with matching scores of 113.
