Calvin
Calvin senior Brendan VanHouten shattered his own school record in the hammer throw Friday afternoon at the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State University. VanHouten unleashed a throw of 193-3 in the hammer throw to shatter his previous school record of 183-9 set earlier this year. The throw was good for second place on Friday also vaulted VanHouten up to eighth on the NCAA III performance list. VanHouten was part of a powerful one-two punch for the Knights in the hammer throw as sophomore Bryce Reynolds was sixth with a career-best throw of 170-11. The throw was a career-best by more than eight feet for Reynolds and places him 42nd on the NCAA III performance list. The Knights had a strong weekend in the field events. Senior Lee Barents had a career-best throw of 22-8 in the long jump that was good for second place. He just missed a season-best in the triple jump with a leap of 42-3 1/4 that was good for fifth place. In the pole vault, junior Jonathan Walt was ninth (14-3 1/4). Simon Detmer, who has right side paralysis due to cerebral palsy, broke the National USA Adaptive Track and Field Under 20 age record for the 1,500m run while competing at the Al Owens Classic. Detmer ran in 4:51.04, breaking the previous record of 4:52.0.
