MIAA Announced Expansion of 2022 Basketball Tournaments

FREELAND, Mich. -- On February 3, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced that the 2022 MIAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments will once again be expanded to eight teams due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although all programs aim to play the remainder of their regular-season contests, the expansion of the tournaments will ensure that teams will have a chance at competing for the conference tournament championship regardless of whether or not they are able to complete league play due to COVID-19 cancellations.

If all MIAA teams play one-hundred percent of their conference contests, tournament seeding will proceed as usual: The team with the best regular season win/loss record in conference play will assume the No. 1 position and the first seed.  The team with the second best record will assume the No. 2 position and the second seed, etc.  If not all league games are contested, a strength-of-schedule formula will be used to determine tournament seeding, similar to the formula used by the NCAA to seed Division I tournaments.

The final date of regular-season competition is Saturday, February 19.  The MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament will begin on Tuesday, February 22, followed by the MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday, February 23.  Tournament semifinal games are slated for Friday, February 25, with the championship contests to be held on Saturday, February 26.  The highest-seeded team of each matchup throughout the tournament will serve as the host.
