Around the MIAA 

Adrian (14-11, 8-6)

The Adrian College men's basketball team finished 1-1 on the week with an 85-76 win over Olivet and an 81-52 loss to Calvin on the road. The Bulldogs locked up the No. 3 seed in the MIAA conference tournament and will host Hope College on Tuesday. The Bulldogs were led by Jordan Harris against Olivet as he dropped 25 points with five rebounds and five assists. Jeremy Kalonji added 18 points with six rebounds and Kendall Bellamy scored 11 points and added seven rebounds. The Bulldogs struggled to find their groove against Calvin. Harris was the only double-digit scorer for Adrian with 30 points. Calvin held Kalonji to only two points which marks his first game this season where he scored less than 10 points.


RV Albion (21-4, 12-2)

A 2-0 week for the Britons secured the 2020 MIAA Championship outright, the team's first since the 2006 campaign. After a 66-62 win over Trine Feb. 19, Albion finished the regular season with a 90-69 victory over Olivet Feb. 22. In that game, Albion was led by Caden Ebeling with 17 and Juwan Perry not far behind contributing 15 to the effort. Jamezell Davis, Jr. (14) and Cortez Garland (11) also scored in double figures.


Alma (13-2, 7-7)

The men's basketball team is in the MIAA postseason for the sixth time in the last seven years thanks to an 84-80 win over Kalamazoo College in the regular season finale on Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon. The game was tightly contested all the way through; neither team led by more than eight points at any time. Alma took the lead for good with two minutes left when Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.) converted an and-1. Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich.) led all players with 29 points. He shot 70 percent from deep (a new career-high) with seven made threes (tying a career-high). Woodruff pulled down 10 boards for the third time in his career. He also dished out a career-high six assists. The program recognized the accomplishments and dedication of its five-member senior class – Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Marcus Malling (Lowell, Mich.), Zach Sinke (Grand Haven, Mich.), Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) and Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich.) – prior to the game. On Wednesday (Feb. 19), Alma suffered a 98-96 loss to Hope in overtime. The Scots trailed by as many as 24 points in the second half but came back behind a sensational performance by Kleiver. The sophomore guard scored 28 second-half points, shooting 9-of-13 from the field, 5-of-9 from three and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.


Calvin (15-10, 9-5)

Calvin men’s basketball went 1-1 this past week by losing at Kalamazoo with a score of 58-53 and a win over Adrian at home with a score of 81-52. Senior Derrick DeVries had another great week with a total of 48 points and 11 rebounds. He had 31 points and 8 rebounds in the win against Adrian, and teammate Tony DeWitte finished 14 points and 5 rebounds. The team was 11-21 from the three-point line in the win against Adrian. The Knights finish the regular season with an overall record of 15-10 and 9-5 in the MIAA earning them second place in the standings.


Hope (12-13, 5-9)

The Hope College men's basketball team split its final two regular-season games, winning at Alma College in overtime, 98-96, and losing 73-59 at Trine University. Forward Preston Granger scored a team-high 33 points against Alma and a team-high 23 points against Trine.


Kalamazoo (7-18, 4-10)

Olivet (6-19, 3-11)

Olivet closed out the 2019-20 season last week with an 85-76 loss to Adrian and 90-69 loss at Albion. Against Adrian, junior Eddie Thigpen scored a game-high 27 points. Senior Keyon Rainey posted a double-double with 11 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Against Albion, freshman Britton Angell scored 15 points, followed by Thigpen (13) and senior Ryan Franklin (10).


Trine (14-11, 8-6)

Finished the regular season with a 1-1 record that included a 73-59 win against Hope...Langston Johnson averaged 14.0 ppg to lead all Trine scorers...He also finished among the team leaders in rebounding at 4.5 rpg and had a team-best eight assists for the week...Trine will be the fourth seed in this year's MIAA Tournament and will host Alma in a quarterfinal game.
