Around the MIAA 

Adrian (8-9, 2-4)

The Adrian College men's basketball team went 1-1 on the week. On Wednesday, they were defeated on road again Albion 84-62. The Bulldogs followed up on Saturday with a win over Olivet to snap their 3-game losing streak. Jordan Harris and Jeremy Kalonji lead the team in scoring by each scoring 31 points. Adrian came away with a 96-83 win to give itself a 2-4 conference record.


RV Albion (15-2, 6-0)

Albion captured possession of first place alone in the MIAA with their 88-82 win over Trine Jan. 25 in Angola, Ind. Jamezell Davis, Jr., led all scorers with 32 points while adding a team-high four assists, while Cortez Garland tallied a career-best 27 points thanks to a 13-of-13 effort at the free throw line. Albion, in the midst of a nine-game winning streak, also defeated Adrian last week, 84-62. Davis had a game-high 17 points to fuel the Britons' effort.


Alma (8-9, 2-4)

The Scots outlasted Hope 91-86 Jan. 25. It is the first win over the Flying Dutchmen in Holland since the 1993-94 season and Alma's first ever win over Hope at the DeVos Fieldhouse. Senior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) and sophomore Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich.) combined to score the Scots' last 11 points of the game. With Alma up three, Kleiver dribbled through the defense and created space for himself with a midrange stepback jumper that he nailed with 12 seconds left to seal the win. Kleiver finished with 16 points and six assists.


Calvin (10-7, 4-2)

Calvin men’s basketball went 2-0 this past week with two conference wins against Alma College with a score of 82-61, and Kalamazoo College with a score of 90-75. Senior Derrick DeVries had a great week with a total of 62 points, 17 rebounds and shot 22-26 from the free throw line and going 15-18 against Kalamazoo. Also, junior Thad Shymanski had a total of 31 points as well. Calvin now improves to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA.


Hope (10-7, 3-3)

The Flying Dutchmen went 1-1 in MIAA play last week, winning, 75-61, at Kalamazoo and losing, 91-86, at home to Alma. At Kalamazoo, Preston Granger (Lansing, Mich.) recorded a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Evan Thomas (Okemos, Mich.) totaled 24 points and 12 rebounds. Against Alma, Granger totaled a career-high 40 points and become the fourth Hope player to score 40 points in a game at DeVos Fieldhouse. Saturday's game was a Purple Community one and raised money for Van Andel Institute.


Kalamazoo (4-13, 1-5)

Kalamazoo battled tough with Hope and Calvin this past week but dropped both games by scores of 75-61 against the Flying Dutchmen and 90-75 against the Knights. Senior Tanner Blyly had another big week for the Hornets as he tallied 10 points, eights rebouds, and six assists in game one and followed up the performance with 20 points, seven rebounds, and four assists on Saturday. Fellow senior Tre Humes tallied 24 points on the week including a team-high 18 against Hope. Ben Reiter also posted 24 points in the two games as his pair of three-pointers against Hope led to 15 points in the game. Kalamazoo has a pair of home games this week as it hosts Alma on Wednesday evening before welcoming Trine to town on Saturday.


Olivet (4-13, 1-5)

Olivet let first-half leads slip away in losses at Trine and Adrian. Against Trine, Olivet led by five points in the first half. The Thunder came back to gain its largest lead of the game at nine points. The Comets answered with an 11-0 run to take the lead back. The teams traded baskets until junior Shawn Pardee tied the game at 71-71 with 19.6 seconds remaining. Two Trine free throws with 4.5 ticks showing on the clock won the game. Pardee scored a team-best 22 points. Freshman Britton Angell and junior Eddie Thigpen each grabbed eight rebounds. In the first half against Adrian, Olivet led by as many as 12 points before settling for a five-point halftime advantage. The Bulldogs used a 16-1 run in the second half to take a seven-point lead, 54-47. The Comets fought back and closed the gap to two points with 3:31 but were unable to draw any closer. Pardee, Thigpen and Chris Martin finished with 19 points apiece. The Comets play six of their final eight regular season games at home inside the Upton Center Gym, beginning Wednesday against MIAA leader Albion.


Trine (11-6, 5-1)

Ended the week with a 1-1 record that included a 73-71 win against Olivet...five Trine players averaged 10 or more points for the week with Langston Johnson leading the way with an 18.5 ppg average on 40.0 percent shooting (14-of-35)...He also had nine assists and one steal.
