Adrian, Trine Advance to MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament Championship

Adrian and Trine each emerged from nail-biter semifinal contests against the top two seeds in Friday's action of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament and will vie for an NCAA Championship automatic berth Saturday, Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium.


Adrian 80, Calvin 78

Trailing 42-27 at the half, Adrian dug deep and outscored Calvin 53-36 in the second half to defeat the Knights 80-78 in the first semifinal Friday (Feb. 28) to advance to their first MIAA tournament title game since 2012. 

Adrian's Jeremy Kalonji scored 18 of a team-high 30 points in the second half, while Kendall Bellamy and Jordan Harris added 16 and 11 points, respectively, after halftime to help fuel the Bulldogs' rally. Bellamy finished with 18 points and Harris 13 points. 

Calvin's Derrick DeVries and Thad Shymanski scored 59 of Calvin's 78 points, with 31 and 28 points, respectively.


Trine 77, Albion 73

Trine took a 43-30 first-half lead and then held off a late Albion rally to advance to the MIAA Tournament championship with a 77-73 win over top-seed and host Albion Friday night.

Trine was paced by Langston Johnson, who scored a team-best 20 points, Maurice Hunter was 7-of-10 from the field on the way to a 16-point performance to go with seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Albion's Jamezell Davis, Jr. led the Britons with 21 points.
