At the conclusion of the 2019-20 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball regular season Saturday (Feb. 22), head coaches from the MIAA's eight member institutions that sponsor men's basketball voted on All-MIAA awards.
Calvin's senior wing Derrick DeVries was voted as the MIAA's Most Valuable Player after leading the MIAA in scoring in conference games, averaging 25.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in 14 starts. DeVries also averaged 3.6 assists and had a 1.5 assist to turnover ratio, which were also among league leaders.
DeVries, who was a first-team selection in 2019 and a second-team honoree in 2018, headlines an All-MIAA first team that included repeat All-MIAA selections from Albion, Jamezell Davis, Jr. and Caden Ebeling. Also garnering first-team honors in 2020 were Hope's Preston Granger, Adrian's Jordan Harris, and Trine's Langston Johnson.
Albion's Cortez Garland was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. The sophomore guard aided Albion defensively by averaging 1.5 steals per game to rank second in the MIAA and defended opponents' top guard throughout the season. Garland averaged less than two personal fouls per game in MIAA play in 28.9 minutes per contest.
Adrian's Jeremy Kalonji garnered second-team All-MIAA honors for the third consecutive year. Also earning second-team honors were Alma's Cole Kleiver and Ryan Stevens, Calvin's That Shymanski, Kalamazoo's Tanner Blyly, and Trine's Maurice Hunter.
