Around the MIAA

Adrian (3-16, 0-8)

The Bulldogs lost two conference games last week. Adrian lost in Kalamazoo 67-62 on Wednesday, AC’s second consecutive loss by five points. The Bulldogs were down big in the first half but fought back and erased the deficit to only three points with a few seconds remaining but couldn’t complete the comeback. Junior forward Jeremy Kalonji led all scorers with 28 points, matching a career high from earlier this year. Adrian then lost to Calvin 79-53 at home on Saturday. Kalonji continued to dominate offensively, leading all scorers with 19 points despite fouling out with nine minutes remaining.


Albion (13-6, 6-2)

Albion shot 52 percent in the second half to rally for the victory at Olivet last Saturday…Caden Ebeling (Shelby Township, Mich.) scored at least 20 for the fifth time this season with 25 points (along with eight rebounds) at Olivet. Ebeling averaged 17.5 points in the two games last week, shooting 65 percent from the field (13-of-20)…ArShawn Parker (Detroit, Mich.) scored 16 at Hope and 15 at Olivet while shooting 45 percent (10-of-22) and averaging 3.5 assists…Quinton Armstrong (Lansing, Mich.) scored a season-high 18 at Hope. Armstrong shot 68 percent (13-of-19) for the week.

Alma (4-15, 3-5)

Alma fell in two tight games last week, first 87-86 to Trine on Wednesday (Jan. 23) and later to Kalamazoo 92-82 in overtime on Saturday (Jan. 26). The Scots led by as much as 14 against the Thunder before allowing Trine back in the game. All five starters scored in double figures, led by junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) who scored 19 points and added nine assists and four steals. Junior guard Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored 15 points and pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds. Against Kalamazoo, the Scots came back from down 16 behind junior Kyle Woodruff's (Grand Blanc, Mich.) 30 points, including the game-tying layup with ten seconds left. Alma would go cold in overtime, though, leaving with a loss. Freshman center Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich.) set career-highs in rebounding in both games with 10 against Trine and 14 against Kalamazoo.

Hope 11-8, 4-4)

Hope defeated Albion Jan. 23, 77-70, at DeVos Fieldhouse and lost to Trine 73-69 on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse. Guard Riley Lewis and forward Dennis Towns scored 16 points against Albion to lead the Flying Dutchmen. Riley Lewis and center Preston Granger topped Hope against Trine with 18 points apiece.


Kalamazoo (5-14, 2-6)

The Hornets picked up two MIAA wins this week over Adrian (67-62) and Alma (92-82) in overtime. Junior forward Ben Reiter led Kalamazoo's big week by scoring 40 total points in the two games. Reiter connected on six of 14 three-point attempts and was named MIAA Player of the Week. Jeremiah Vincent came up huge for the Hornets in the overtime win over Alma by pouring in a career-high 31 points and grabbing seven rebounds while playing 42 minutes in the game. Kalamazoo will look to continue its winning streak when it hosts Hope College on Wednesday, Jan. 30 before heading to Olivet on Saturday.


Olivet (10-9, 6-2)

The Comets split two close MIAA games last week. In an 85-81 win at Calvin Jan. 23, Olivet posted a 53.2 field goal percentage after making 25-of-47 baskets. The Comets drained 30-of-43 free throws. Senior Tracy Edmond led the way with 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor and 11-of-18 shooting from the charity stripe. Trevor Manuel finished with 23 points and eight rebounds. Senior Colin Jones added 19 points. The last time Olivet beat Calvin on its home court was just over 10 years ago on Jan. 21, 2009. In a 70-67 loss to Albion, Olivet made four more baskets than the Britons, 28-24. Both teams had five three-pointers. The difference in the game was Albion made 17-of-22 free throws compared to 6-of-8 for the Comets. Manuel scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jones had 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Senior Diangelo Carlton also notched eight rebounds, including four off the offensive glass. Edmond tallied nine points and nine assists.


Trine (14-5, 7-1)

Trine defeated both Alma (87-86) and Hope (73-69) last week and currently has a six-game winning streak. This season's sweep of the Flying Dutchmen marks the first time Trine has won both regular-season meetings against Hope. Myles Copeland led the team in scoring with 18.5 points per game after a 19-point effort against Alma and 18 points against Hope.
