Trine Earns First-Ever MIAA Men's Basketball Championship

With an 85-52 win over Alma Saturday, the Trine men's basketball team secured their first-ever Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball championship. The outright champions finished the MIAA season with an 11-3 record and will host the semifinals and finals of the MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament Feb. 22-23 in Angola, Ind.

Leading Trine in the win was Myles Copeland, who tallied a game-high 20 points with a team-best seven rebounds. Langston Johnson added 19 points, bolstered by a 5-of-6 shooting performance from three-point range, while Marcus Winters had a game-high nine assists along with five steals and five rebounds.

As the outright MIAA champion and the top seed in the 2019 MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament, Trine becomes the first MIAA school since 2016 to host both the men's and women's basketball tournaments. 

The 2019 MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament will feature first-round play Wednesday, Feb. 20 with No. 3 and No. 4 seeds hosting No. 6 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. The two winners will advance to the semifinals, where Trine and No. 2 seed Albion await for contests Friday, Feb. 22 - semifinal games will be contest at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament Championship will tip off Saturday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. at the MTI Center.

Trine becomes the first MIAA men's basketball team other than Hope or Calvin to win the MIAA title outright since Albion did so in 2005.
