Adrian (3-3, 2-1)
Sophomore quarterback Jack Wurzer completed 24 of 32 passes for a school-record 403 yards and four touchdowns to lead Adrian to a come-from-behind 34-31 victory over visiting Alma in MIAA football and Family Weekend action Oct. 19. Adrian, which trailed three times, took the lead for good with 12 minutes and 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter when Wurzer found Wilson for 61-yard catch-and-run along with the home team sideline into the end zone.
Albion (4-2, 1-2)
John Wester (Palmetto, Fla.) turned in the fifth-longest interception return in Division III this season when Wester went 90 yards for a touchdown and Jacob Clark (Livonia, Mich.) rushed for a career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns in the Britons victory at Kalamazoo…Albion rushed for 261 yards at Kalamazoo, its second-most in a game this season (the Britons rushed for 292 yards vs. Defiance)…Albion has rushed for more than 200 yards in four of six games this season…The Albion defense was good on third down as Kalamazoo converted just 4-of-17 of those situations…Albion wrapped up three sacks at Kalamazoo, its second-most in a game this season (the Britons got five sacks vs. Defiance).
Alma (4-2, 2-1)
The Scots fell to Adrian 34-31 on Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon. The Scots scored 17 points on three drives less than 50 yards. Alma took a 24-20 lead early in the fourth quarter when Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich.) found Jarrett Bright (Flint, Mich.) with a seven-yard pass on a trick play. Adrian would score two straight touchdowns, the second one taking 7:18 off the clock to put the Bulldogs up 24-34 with 2:37 remaining. Alma answered with a seven-play, 55-yard touchdown drive to pull to within three but did not recover the ensuing onside kick.
Finlandia (0-6, 0-3)
Against RV Hope Oct. 19, Finlandia got on the scoreboard first with a bit of trickery. On the first play of the game, Finlandia's Bailey Harris took a handoff and ran up the middle before flipping the ball back to quarterback Darin Johnson. From there, Johnson hit receiver Joshua Eve in stride resulting in an 83-yard touchdown pass; the play was the longest pass in Finlandia history.
RV/RV Hope (5-1, 3-0)
Hope remained unbeaten in MIAA play with another record-setting performance on Saturday in its first game in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 30 years. The Flying Dutchmen scored 58 points in the first half, the most ever by a Hope team in one half, and went on to defeat Finlandia University, 79-12, at McAfee Field in Hancock. The 79 points were the most ever by Hope in an MIAA game, topping the 70 the Flying Dutchmen scored last year in a 70-6 win over Finlandia at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium. It was also the second-highest scoring output in school history, topped only by an 80-6 win over Defiance (Ohio) College earlier this season on Sept. 14. Four different Hope running backs rushed for at least 80 yards, led by Kenyea Houston (Chicago, Ill.) with 98 yards on eight carries. Freshman Bryce Stark (Montague, Mich.) added 92 yards on 13 carriers, Connor Mellon (Adrian, Mich.) had 90 yards on just three carries, and Daniel Romano (Montague, Mich.) ran for 81 yards on 14 attempts.
Kalamazoo (2-4, 1-2)
Kalamazoo dropped its game with Albion 37-17 on Homecoming Saturday. Niko Nickson was 28-of-51 passing for 255 yards. Bubba Wilson led the receivers with six catches for 49 yards. Pierce Burke made five catches for 48 yards. Sam Matthews (41 yards) and Raekwon Castelow (33 yards) each made four catches. Jared Pittman rushed for 25 yards on 10 carries. Anthony Giovanni had 22 yards on four carries. Taylor Jackson led the Kalamazoo defense with 11 total tackles. Noah Coplan had eight while Dakota Walbeck finished with seven. Jacob Chantres and Isaiah Fleming were each in on a sack. Jake Sypniewski and DeShawn Moore each had an interception. The Hornets return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Alma with a 4 p.m. start.
Olivet (6-0, 3-0)
Olivet stayed perfect on the 2019 season with a 34-17 win at Trine. The Comets led 21-10 at halftime before settling for the 17-point win over the Thunder. The Comets totaled 433 yards of offense compared to 323 for Trine. Senior Noah McMinn had 23 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Christian Rogers rushed 14 times for 68 yards. Freshman Kaleb Jarrett threw for 194 yards on 12-of-21 passing. Jarrett also had a 10-yard scamper for Olivet's final touchdown. Freshman Jalen Broussard hauled in four passes for 57 yards. Seniors Coleton Swims and Kolby topped the defense with nine tackles each. Sophomore Andrew Campbell had six total tackles. The defense also recovered three fumbles, including two on the first two Trine drives.
Trine (3-3, 0-3)
Lost to Olivet, 34-17...freshman Alex Price finished with 15 completions on the day in 24 attempts for 184 yards to go along with his two TD passes. Price was also the team's leading rusher with 83 yards on 17 carries... Ivan Upshaw had a game-high 12 tackles...junior Keysean Amiso also fnished in double figures in tackles with 10 stops.
