Albion (3-1, 0-1)
Albion running back Markell McCoy (Oak Park, Mich.) rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown in Albion's 32-28 loss to MIAA rival Alma Oct. 5. It was McCoy's second 100-yard rushing game of the season. Receiver Justin Thomas (Walled Lake, Mich.) hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass against the Scots, extending Thomas' string of touchdown receptions to the last six games played for the Britons, dating back to the Trine game (Oct. 27) of last season.
Alma (3-1, 1-0)
The Scots erased a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit against Albion to win 32-28 on Saturday (Oct. 5) afternoon. The Scots (3-1, 1-0) outgained Albion 201-26 in the fourth quarter and scored touchdowns on their last three possessions to earn their first win over the Britons since 2016 and their second in the last nine years. Quarterback Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) scored the game-winning 35-yard touchdown on a designed quarterback draw. Alma outrushed Albion 291-170 on the day. Stevens and running back Austin Spratling (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each posted double-digit carries; Stevens ran for a career-best 108 yards and two touchdowns. Spratling was also the team's leading receiver with four catches for 78 yards and one touchdown; Spratling had a career-high 152 yards from scrimmage. Alma forced three Albion turnovers including two in the fourth quarter.
Finlandia (0-4, 0-1)
The Lions ran for 122 yards, the most against Olivet this season. The Comets had been #10 in rushing defense for D3 at 48 per game. FinnU gave up just 64 yards, lowering their national leading pass defense to 67.4 yards per game.
RV/RV Hope (3-1, 1-0)
Hope opened its MIAA season with an emphatic victory at two-time defending conference champion Trine Oct. 5. The Flying Dutchmen scored the first five times they possessed the football, and their defense did not allow the 24th-ranked Thunder to reach the red zone the entire game. The result: a 51-0 victory, Hope’s first shutout win in an MIAA opener in nine years and the Flying Dutchmen’s highest point output in a conference opener in 20 years. Senior quarterback Mason Opple (Hudsonville, Mich.) Opple personally accounted for 312 yards of total offense for the Dutchmen, completing 17 of 28 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns, extending a streak of consecutive passes without an interception to 198 that dated back to last year’s game against Trine in Holland. Opple also rushed for 102 yards on 13 carries. Senior defensive end Jake Babb (Caledonia, Mich.) and senior linebacker Mason Dekker (Holland, Mich.) led Hope on defense with six tackles each.
Kalamazoo (1-3, 0-1)
Kalamazoo lost its MIAA opener 30-27 at Adrian on Saturday as the Bulldogs kicked an 18-yard field goal with 2.2 seconds remaining to win. After being down 21-10 at halftime, the Hornets worked to tie the game with 8:16 remaining but were unable to complete the comeback. Niko Nickson was 7-for-18 passing with 118 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Giovanni added 18 yards passing and also ruched for 71 yards on nine carries. CJ Foster led the team with 51 yards on eight carries while Jared Pittman added 48 yards on 10 rushes. Greg Kearns was 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points in the game. Taylor Jackson led the Hornet defense with nine tackles and one interception. Dakota Walbeck and Josh Martin each added eight tackles. Kalamazoo is back home on Saturday, Oct. 12 as the Hornets host Finlandia at 1 p.m.
Olivet (4-0, 1-0)
Olivet opened MIAA play with a 63-6 rout at Finlandia Oct. 5. The Comets scored a touchdown on eight of their nine offensive drives in the game, running 56 plays and gaining 453 total yards. Sophomore Jake Trujillo had 10 carries for 101 yards and three touchdowns. Christian Rogers rushed 14 times for 94 yards. Three quarterbacks played in the game, with each accounting for one touchdown. Freshman Kaleb Jarrett threw a 43-yard touchdown, junior David Coffey ran for two touchdowns, and sophomore Chad Enwright had a 20-yard TD run. Junior Michael VanSumeran topped the defense with six total tackles. Overall, the defense recorded 11 tackles for minus 54 yards. Junior Paris Trotter recovered a fumble in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. Senior Jamie Shaffer had two quarterback sacks.
RV/RV Trine (3-1, 0-1)
Trine lost to Hope, 51-0. Dylan Dowling led Trine offensively with a team-high 85 yards rushing on 13 carries (6.5 yards per rush). Defensively, freshman Jake Gladieux made a game-high 14 tackles (six solo and eight assists) to go along with one breakup.
