Around the MIAA

Adrian (3-3, 1-2)

Adrian defeated Alma College, 28-23, for its first conference win of the season…the Bulldogs displayed an all-around game that featured 429 yards of total offense and limited the host Scots to an opponent-low 291 total yards…Emmanuel Stewart rumbled for a game-high 163 yards on 26 carries and he scored two touchdowns…Jack Wurzer was efficient in the passing game by connecting on 17 for 25 attempts for 256 yards and two TDs against no interceptions….Jerron McGaw was Wurzer's favorite target to the tune of six catches for a game-best 147 yards and a TD…Tim McPhee had a career-best 14 total tackles, including a season's best seven solo, to lead all student-athletes….Freshman Clarence Madison continues his emergence as another offensive weapon with eight receptions for 82 yards and a TD…McPhee leads Adrian with 52 tackles (19 solo, 33 assists), setting a career high; Last year, he posted 51 in nine contests… Stewart upped his school career records to 4,615 yards rushing and 5,281 all-purpose yards….Second on the Bulldogs' all-time lists for receiving yards (2,655) and catches (165), McGaw needs three TD receptions to pass Justin Hemm, who had 26 from 2009-12….Adrian has won 11 of the past 12 meetings over the Scots.


Albion (4-2, 1-2)

Albion’s defense collected three more sacks against Kalamazoo and sits 17th among D-III teams with an average of 3.83 per game. DT Malik Bozell (Battle Creek, Mich.) and DE Mitchell Arendsen (Zeeland, Mich.) wrapped up solo sacks, while DE David Aukema (Holland, Mich.) and DE Tyler George (Homer, Mich.) combined for the third…Arendsen was credited with 2 ½ tackles for loss vs. Kalamazoo and he’s 16th in D-III for sacks (1.17 per game)…K Andrew Fabry (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) is 10-for-10 on field goals this season. He is one of eight in D-III to make all of their field goal attempts…Despite gaining 266 total yards last Saturday, Albion is still 9th in D-III in total offense at nearly 527 yards per game.


Alma (1-5, 0-3)

The Alma College football team fell to Adrian College 28-23 on Saturday (Oct. 13) in the program's cAres game to promote cancer awareness. Alma (1-5, 0-3 MIAA) put up 291 yards of offense, 161 of which were on the ground. The Scots used a two-quarterback system with Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) and Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell). Stevens had 78 yards passing and two touchdowns, one to Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) and the other to Chase Hinkle (Concord, Mich./Concord). Ippel led the team with 68 rushing yards of 14 carries.


Finlandia (0-6, 0-3)

Turnovers were the key as the Finlandia University football team (0-6, 0-3 MIAA) lost 70-6 to Hope (4-2, 2-1 MIAA), Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium. Defensively, the Lions held Hope to 78 yards in the air, fourth lowest total in school history.  Senior Dillion Hueckstaedt had 11 tackles while freshmen Kyle Huskey and John Skinner had six each.


Hope (4-2, 2-1)

The Hope College football team took advantage of numerous special teams breakdowns by a young Finlandia squad on Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen went on to win 70-6 at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium in their highest-scoring MIAA game. Hope, now 2-1 in the MIAA and 4-2 overall, blocked two punts in the first three minutes to set up short scoring drives. The Flying Dutchmen also recovered a lateral in the end zone for another touchdown as they raced to a 21-0 lead seven minutes into the game.


Kalamazoo (6-0, 3-0)

The Kalamazoo College football team remained undefeated with a 20-19 win at Albion College (4-2, 1-2) on Saturday. The Hornets are tied for first place in the MIAA at 3-0 and are 6-0 overall for the first time since 1978. Kalamazoo outgained Albion 177 yards to 73 yards in the first half, but the score was even at 3-3 at the break. Zach VanFaussien found Raekwon Castelow down the middle of the field for a 58-yard touchdown putting the Hornets up 20-13 with just 1:44 remaining which proved to be the game-winning score. VanFaussien was 18-of-30 passing for 211 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The quarterback also ran for 34 yards on 15 carries. Jakob Frederick led the Hornet defense with 11 total tackles including a sack.


Olivet (4-2, 2-1)

The Olivet College football team lost a nail-biter to No. 14 Trine, 50-49. Senior quarterback Lane Porter was responsible for all seven Comet touchdowns, as he had four rushing scores and threw for three scores. Jacob Jodway, this week's MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, caught 10 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Matthew Ellis led the ground game with 31 rushes for 172 yards. Four players each had seven tackles. Of his seven stops, Jeylin Rogers had a safety when he tackled MIAA's leading rusher Lamar Carswell in the end zone.


#14/16 Trine (6-0, 3-0)

Trine defeated Olivet, 50-49...Lamar Carswell rushed for 199 yards to become the all-time rushing leader...Jeffery Barnett had 147 receiving yards to become program's all-time receiving leader.
