MIAA Athletes of the Week - September 30, 2019

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 12 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on September 29, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Kiehl Smith, Albion
Senior
Jonesville, Mich.

Kiehl Smith finished sixth in a field of 274 competitors in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Sept. 28, competing in the Gold Division race. In a field with NCAA Division I, II, and III competitors, Smith clipped a 5:16 pace on the way to a 26:09 finish. Smith was also the top MIAA runner by 26 seconds in the event.

MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Jordan Revenaugh, Albion
Junior
Rochester, Mich.

Jordan Revenaugh placed third out of 281 runners at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Sept. 28, competing in the Gold Division event. Revenaugh covered the 5K course in 18:58, improving a personal-best by over one minute; Revenaugh was just 15 seconds behind the leader and seven seconds off the NCAA Division III leader. Revenaugh out-ran all NCAA Division I and Division II competitors in the event.

MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

Cameron Ruge, Trine
Junior
Coldwater, Mich.

Cameron Ruge was the medalist at the MIAA Jamboree #3 Sept. 28, carding a two-under 69 to lead the field by one stroke; Ruge's effort was one stroke off tying the MIAA record at Adrian's Lenawee Country Club. Ruge is now tied for the lead in the MIAA standings with a 72.3 stroke average.

MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

Hunter Kehoe, Saint Mary's
Junior
Traverse City, Mich.

Hunter Kehoe was one of only two golfers to break 80 at the MIAA Jamboree at Lenawee Country Club Sept. 24, shooting a five-over 77 to earn medalist honors by one stroke. Kehoe's MIAA Jamboree win is the second of the season. 

MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Joel Zaretti, Albion
Junior, M
Troy, Mich.

Joel Zaretti was a key factor as a defensive midfielder in Albion's 3-1 win over Bluffton Sept. 27. Zaretti was an integral part in the Albion defense allowing just four shot attempts in the game, with only three shots on goal. Zaretti was also an all-around participant in the contest, tallying two shots. 
 

MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

Ian Adams, Calvin
Senior, M
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Ian Adams fueled Calvin in two non-conference wins, including Calvin's 2-1 win over No. 6 Chicago to give the Maroons their first loss of the season. Adams assisted on the first goal of the game in the 20th minute. Later in the week in Calvin's 5-1 win at Manchester Sept. 28, Adams was involved in all five Calvin goals that came in a span of 14 minutes in the first half; Adams assisted in the 15th, 22nd, and 25th minutes while scoring in the 23rd and 29th minutes.

MIAA Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Hannah Wolfe, Kalamazoo
Junior, GK
West Bloomfield, Mich.

Hannah Wolfe made four saves in Kalamazoo's 0-0 overtime draw in the Hornets' MIAA-opening contest against defending MIAA champions Hope Sept. 28. The shutout was Wolfe's third of the season and second overtime shutout of 2019.

MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

McKenna Mahoney, Adrian
Sophomore, F
Trenton, Mich.

McKenna Mahoney scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 22nd minute, in Adrian's 8-0 win over Transylvania Sept. 28. Mahoney added an insurance goal in the 56th minute to aid the Adrian offense to their highest goal output since 2017.

MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Patrick Smoker, Albion
Sophomore, No. 3 singles/No. 2 doubles
Kalamazoo, Mich.

Patrick Smoker was victorious at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles as part of Albion's 5-4 win over Alma in a non-conference match Sept. 27. Smoker started with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles with partner Matthew Czarnecki. In singles play, Smoker prevailed in a 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 victory.

MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Brooke Butterfield, Alma
Junior, No. 1 singles/No. 1 doubles
Portland, Mich.

Brooke Butterfield was a winner at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles in Alma's 8-1 victory over Albion Sept. 27 in a non-conference match. Butterfield paired with Abigail Davenport for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles before a 6-7, 6-2, 10-1 come-from-behind victory at No. 1 singles. 

MIAA Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Kate Winter, Albion
Junior, OH
White Lake, Mich.

Kate Winter averaged 3.6 kills and 4.1 points per set in a 2-0 MIAA opening week for Albion last week, including a 3-1 win against Saint Mary's Sept. 24 and at Adrian Sept. 28, 3-1. Winter registered 14 kills on a .257 hitting percentage to go with four digs and five blocks against Saint Mary's, and then notched 15 kills, two blocks, and two digs against the Bulldogs.

MIAA Volleyball Specialist Athlete of the Week

Jacqueline Baughman, Trine
Junior, S
Lake Orion, Mich.

Jacqueline Baughman averaged 9.1 assists, 1.9 digs, and was just shy of a triple-double in a 3-1 week for Trine, which included two MIAA victories. In Trine's 3-2 come-from-behind win over Adrian Sept. 24, Baughman tallied 34 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, four blocks, and a service ace. Later in the week at Olivet Sept. 27, Baughman gave out 42 assists in the Thunder's four-set win.
