MIAA Players of the Week - September 4, 2018
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on September 2, 2018.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition.
MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Kiehl Smith, Albion
Junior
Jonesville, Mich.
Individually won the Sodexo Grizzly Invite while guiding the Albion men's team to the team title over two regionally ranked squads (DePauw and Mount Union). Smith crossed the line 10 seconds in front of the second-place runner with a time of 26:29 on the 8K course.
MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Evonne Bultemeyer, Trine
Sophomore
Fort Wayne, Ind.
Bultemeyer won the Wittenberg Cross Country Invitational on Friday, August 31 in Springfield, Ohio. Her time of 19:28 was 38 seconds faster than the second place finisher in the race. Bultemeyer led the Trine women to the team championships as well.
MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Kyle Thomas, Albion
Sophomore, Quarterback
Wixom, Mich.
In Albion's 59-6 win over Defiance Sept. 1, Thomas threw for 267 yards, completing 23 of 34 attempts, with four touchdowns; the sophomore quarterback finished the contest with a 166.6 efficiency rating in the season-openng win. Thomas also added 59 yards of rushing for the Britons.
MIAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Mitchell Arendsen, Albion
Sophomore, Defensive End
Zeeland, Mich.
Arendsen was a main factor in Albion's defensive effort in the Britons' 59-6 win over Defiance Sept. 1. Arendsen totalled three tackles for loss, all three for sacks, to finish with five stops on the day. Arendsen's sacks total is first in NCAA Division III for this season and helped Albion tie for first nationally with nine sacks in their season opener. Arendsen was also named to D3football.com's National Team of the Week.
MIAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Greg Kearns, Kalamazoo
Junior, Kicker
Howell, Mich.
Helped Kalamazoo win the field battle on the way to a 24-7 win over Oberlin Sept. 1. His five kickoffs avearged 64.2 yards per kick, with three touchbacks. Kearns added three extra points and was 1-2 on field goals, converting on a 25-yarder to total six points.
MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week
Daniel Settecerri, Hope
Junior
Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Was the medalist at Olivet College's Lou Collins Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at Bedford Valley Country Club. With a five-under total of 139 (71-68), Settecerri was three strokes ahead of the field of 83 golfers and benefitted from a three-under score on the course's par 5 holes. Hope went on to win the 36-hole event with a 14-stroke advantage.
MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week
Hunter Kehoe, Saint Mary's
Sophomore
Traverse City, Mich.
Hunter Kehoe was again the medalist golfer for Saint Mary's, leading the Belles to a second-place finish at the 14-team Carthage Battle of the Borders in Bristol, Wis. Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Out of a field of 94 players, Hunter Kehoe was the medalist with a score of 81-74--155, jumping five positions following the opening round and helping lift Saint Mary's from tied for third to second place.
Bobby McCaw, Calvin
Senior, Forward
Dubuque, Iowa
McCaw had a goal and an assist in both of Calvin's victories to open the 2018 campaign. Against Stockton Aug. 31, McCaw's goal in the 48th minute proved to be the game-winner, as the Knights scored the final four goals of their 5-2 home win Aug. 31, while his assist in the in the ninth minute helped Calvin draw even early in the contest. The following day against Manchester, McCaw assisted on the game-winner in the 16th minute and added an insurance strike early in the second half on the way to Calvin's 8-0 win.
Jonathon Daily, Albion
Sophomore, Midfielder
Brighton, Mich.
Daily anchored the Albion defense that allowed just four shots, and only two shots on goal, in two shutout victories to start the season. In Albion's 6-0 win against Marian Aug. 31, Daily tallied the game-winner in the game's first 10 minutes while the defense gave up only one shot on goal and no corner kicks. Daily then added an insurance goal in Albion's 2-0 win over Lawrence Sept. 1, as the Vikings mustered just three shots and one corner kick against the Britons.
Audrey White, Hope
Sophomore, Midfielder
Hudsonville, Mich.
White provided a spark for Hope off the bench last weekend, helping the Flying Dutch tally two wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Against No. 8 Ohio Northern Sept. 1, White shook the net in the 100th minute to vault Hope to a 1-0 overtime win in the neutral site contest. In Hope's season opener against No. 23 Illinois Wesleyan Aug. 31, White came in as a reserve and was part of a second-half attacking push that culminated with what proved to be the game-winner in the 2-1 win.
Eliza Beird, Hope
Senior, Defender
Holland, Mich.
In Hope's season-opening win against No. 23 Illinois Wesleyan Aug. 31, Beird helped subdue Illinois Wesleyan's attack to just five shots and only two shots on goal while assisting on both of Hope's goals in the 2-1 road win. Beird's corner kick in the 76th minute led to Hope's game-winner against the nationally-ranked foe.
Katie Bush, Alma
Senior, Middle Blocker
Lowell, Mich.
Coming off a season where Alma won just eight matches, Bush aided the Scots to a 4-0 week to start the 2018 campaign. Bush finished the week with a .311 hitting percentage, including a .417 effort with 12 kills against Eureka Aug. 31 in the season opener. Bush averaged better than a block per set and had four blocks in three of four matches. She finished with 39.0 points on the week.
Gabrielle Mundt, Olivet
Junior, Defensive Specialist
Dewitt, Mich.
Mundt had no receive errors in 65 receive attempts in four Olivet wins, averaging 5.17 digs per set and hitting double figure digs in four 3-0 wins for the Comets. Mundt added three service aces on the weekend for Olivet, who tallied four wins to start the season after posting only seven wins in 2017 to match their best start (4-0) since the program began in 1978.
