MIAA Sanctions Kalamazoo Following NCAA Infractions Decision

MIAA Sanctions Kalamazoo Following NCAA Infractions Decision

FREELAND, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced today the following sanctions imposed against Kalamazoo College in relation to the College’s actions as set forth in the NCAA major infractions decision dated March 22, 2016. The NCAA later denied Kalamazoo College’s appeal by written decision on October 18, 2016.

The MIAA, acting under the authority of its governing documents, has required Kalamazoo College to vacate wins specific to MIAA competition for a designated four seasons, and will prohibit Kalamazoo College from MIAA postseason competition during the 2017-18 academic year. The sanctions were determined by an 8-1 vote of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.

“The MIAA Presidents and I worked diligently throughout this academic year to determine firm, yet fair sanctions that communicate to our members, and the entire NCAA Division III community, that NCAA financial aid infractions of this magnitude will not be tolerated,” said MIAA Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook. “We are confident in Kalamazoo College’s leadership and commitment to a high standard of compliance with both the NCAA and the MIAA. As the oldest and most stable DIII conference in the country, the MIAA and our membership will work toward mending bridges that will continue to enhance and solidify the MIAA.”

Kalamazoo will vacate all MIAA team-sport victories, including both regular season and postseason contests, for the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 seasons. All MIAA regular season and conference championships by Kalamazoo during the sanctioned time period will be vacated, and applicable signage and publications will reflect those vacated wins and championships. The records for the seasons at issue for Kalamazoo’s MIAA-participating teams will reflect a 0-0 record in MIAA play.

The MIAA will not vacate individual MIAA championships or honors during that time period, and will not vacate non-conference wins or non-conference championships during the above listed seasons.

Further, Kalamazoo College is prohibited from participating in 2017-18 MIAA postseason competition. Of note, this specific action does not restrict Kalamazoo College from receiving an at-large berth to NCAA postseason championships. Individual athletes that participate in cross country and swimming and diving will be allowed to participate in the conference meets and championship events for MIAA individual honors.

“The MIAA greatly respects Kalamazoo College and its President, Jorge Gonzalez. We are pleased to have this situation behind us so we can look forward to building an even stronger conference for our student-athletes,” said Jeffrey Docking, Adrian College President and Chair of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.

Kalamazoo’s vacating of MIAA wins will not affect the win-loss record of opposing MIAA schools. Kalamazoo will also relinquish its standing in the MIAA Commissioner's Cup for all four effected seasons.
