MIAA Athletes of the Week - November 12, 2018
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on November 11, 2018. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

Jamezell Davis, Jr., Albion
Sophomore, Guard
Ypsilanti, Mich.

Davis scored 16 of Albion's final 17 points, including the game's decisive basket - a three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining - in Albion's 66-63 win over Earlham Nov. 11. Davis finished with 18 points, which tied a career-best, while adding four assists and two steals in the win; in Albion's 89-80 season-opening setbak to Case Western Reserve Nov. 9, Davis tallied 18 points with six steals and four assists.

Gabby Timmer, Calvin
Freshman, Forward
Caledonia, Mich.

Timmer averaged 19.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks in her first two collegiate games, aiding Calvin in a 2-0 start to the season. Against Finlandia Nov. 9, Timmer tallied 13 points and seven rebounds with two assists and three steals in the Knights' 82-47 win. The following night against Concordia-Morehead, Timmer tallied 26 points with 18 rebounds in 30 minutes, including a key rebound and free throw late to help the Knights score the game's final nine points over the final four minutes.

MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week

Lamar Carswell, Trine
Senior, Running Back
Toledo, Ohio

Carswell set an MIAA record with 359 yards on 25 carries in Trine's 48-18 win over Kalamazoo Nov. 10. Carswell rushed for four touchdowns, including Trine's first three scores, to claim the MIAA single-season record for touchdowns in a conference season (24) and yards-per-game average (235.4). Carswell had touchdown runs of 77, 54, 23, and two yards and added a long of 83 yards in the first quarter to set up his two-yard TD scamper. 
 

MIAA Football Defensive Player of the Week

Tate Knapp, Hope
Senior, Defensive End
Dorr, Mich.

Knapp led Hope with eight tackles, including three tackles for loss, in the Flying Dutchmen's 33-14 win over Adrian Nov. 10. Knapp helped Hope get on the board in the first quarter with a tackle in the end zone for a safety, and then had three consecutive tackles on Adrian's first offensive series of the second half to force a punt. Knapp finished with two sacks, giving him 12 in MIAA play for the year.
 

MIAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Anthony Giovanni, Kalamazoo
Junior, Returner/Wide Receiver
Farmington Hills, Mich.

Giovanni averaged 28.8 yards per return in Kalamazoo's Nov. 10 loss to nationally-ranked Trine. Giovanni returned 115 yards on four kickoffs, his longest being 49 yards; he also added 56 receiving yards to finish with 171 total yards on Saturday. 

Grant Williams, Hope
Sophomore
East Grand Rapids, Mich.

Williams won the 1-meter diving event in Hope's MIAA dual with Olivet Nov. 9, posting a score of 275.80. Williams placed second on the 3-meter board at the same meet, turning in a score of 273.15.
 

Daniel Keith, Hope
Sophomore
Saline, Mich.

Keith touched first in four events in Hope's MIAA dual win over Olivet Nov. 9. Keith started with a win in the 200 free (1:50.67) to win by six seconds and then added a win in the 100 free (47.72) for the third-fastest time in the MIAA this season. Then, after posting the fastest time in the 200 IM (1:58.60), Keith anchored Hope's 200 free relay in short turnaround time; Keith's time in the IM - his first swim of the event this season - ranks second in the MIAA.

Sara Plohetski, Hope
Senior
South Lyon, Mich.

Plohetski had the top scores for both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events in Hope's dual with Olivet Nov. 9. Plohetski won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 211.35, and followed with a score of 226.45 on the 3-meter later in the meet.
 

MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Week

Hannah Chao, Calvin
Sophomore
Farmington Hills, Mich.

Chao was a key factor in Calvin's 172-90 win at Wheaton Nov. 10. Chao won the 200 IM (2:13.03), touching first by almost two seconds and posting a time that ranks first in the MIAA and 33rd nationally. Chao also had a third-place finish 100 free (54.14), with that time ranking third in the MIAA this season, and a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.41), which ranks fourth in the MIAA this year. 

Zach Cooper, Alma
Junior, 149
Chippewa Hills, Mich.

Cooper went 4-0 at the Trine Invitational Nov. 10 at 149 lbs., including two wins over MIAA opponents. Cooper started with a tech fall against Trine's Nevan Freestone and followed with a major decision over North Central's Ben Williamson, a two-time national qualifier. Cooper then outlasted Olivet's Drew Mandell 19-14 before an 8-3 decision against North Central's Anthony Rink in the title match.
