Tecumseh, Mich. – Battling brisk winds and chilly temperatures, participants at the 2017 MIAA Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships charged through for impressive individual and team efforts at Raisin Valley Golf Club Oct. 28.

Hope prevailed in the women's race, gathering 20 team points to defend their title and edge Calvin's second-place effort of 66 points.

For the men, Calvin combined for 22 team points to fend off Albion (51 points) and Trine (67 points) for the team title.

In the women's race, Hope crossed four of the first five runners, with Alexis Guttilla (21:58.0) pushing through late to take the individual title. Hope's Emily Hamilton, the 2017 MIAA Most Valuable Runner, took second (21.59.9) after being in the lead group for much of the race. Trine's Kyla Binfet (22:00.8) was steady throughout to finish third. Hope's Racheal Webb (22:01.4) and Alissa Frazee (22:10.4) rounded out the top five.

The men's championship saw three runners pull away midway through the race: Calvin's Mark DeJong and Andrew Philipose and Albion's Andrew Bill. DeJong kicked late for the individual title, out-pacing Bill by six seconds with a time of 24:15.5. Bill crossed in 24:21.7 for second place, while Philipose (24:29.3) placed third. Trine's Lewis Duke (24:41.4) and Calvin's Tyler Johnson (24:41.8) completed the top five finishers.

Hope's women's victory was the ninth in program history and third consecutively, while Calvin's men's title was their 31st consecutive MIAA championship.

Teams will now prepare for the 2017 NCAA Regional round Saturday, Nov. 11, with the 2017 NCAA Championship the following weekend in Elsah, Ill., on Saturday, Nov. 18.
