Around the MIAA

Adrian (7-7, 1-1)

The Adrian College volleyball team opened conference play with a win last Tuesday before splitting the Albion Triangular on Saturday. A 3-1 win over the Thunder on Tuesday was capped off by a 13-4 comeback-run to win the fourth set and the match, the largest single-set comeback in Coach Kwan’s tenure. The Bulldogs then lost to Albion in MIAA action and beat Capital in non-conference play as part of the Albion Triangular on Saturday. Both matches only went three sets.


Albion (9-5, 2-0)

Middle blocker Taylor Rosenthal (Vicksburg, Mich.) hit .375 (32-8-64) in three matches last week. She became the third Briton to record more than 900 career kills (Rosenthal is at 915) and she is two blocks shy of tying Keri Slane for second place on Albion’s all-time list…Middle blocker Marie Pregenzer (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) had a good all-around week, hitting .395 (20-3-43) with eight blocks, 12 digs and five aces…Setter Grace VanDorn (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) achieved a pair of double-doubles (season-high 49 assists and 14 digs at Saint Mary’s; 29 assists and 14 digs vs. Capital). She has 28 career double-doubles, placing her fifth on Albion’s all-time list…VanDorn moved past 1,500 career assists (1,537) and she is 108 shy of moving into fourth all-time at Albion.


Alma (11-2, 1-1)

The Alma volleyball team defeated Kalamazoo in its home opener and fell to No. 13 Hope earlier in the week. The Scots are now 11-2 overall and 11-0 against non-nationally ranked opponents. Freshman Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and senior Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led the team in kills with 24 and 19, respectively. Majerle is fifth in the MIAA in kills per set with 3.06. Bush is first in the conference in total blocks with 44.

No. 12 Hope (11-2, 1-1)

The 12th-ranked Hope College volleyball split its first two MIAA matches of the season — beating Alma in three sets at home on Tuesday and falling in five sets at Calvin on Saturday. Hope is now 11-2 on the season. Vanessa Reynhout recorded a season-high 12 kills vs. Alma. Ana Grunewald had a season-high 12 kills against Calvin.


Kalamazoo (3-11, 0-2)

The Kalamazoo College volleyball team ended the week with a 1-1 record after defeating Illinois Tech at home and dropping a road contest with Alma. Senior Shelby Suseland led the Hornets with 14 kills and a .414 attack percentage in the win over the Scarlett Hawks. Grace Kraft added six kills and 14 assists for the Hornets. Maddie Wojcik led Kalamazoo defensively with 18 digs.


Olivet (9-6, 1-1)

The Olivet College volleyball team split its first two MIAA matches of the season. The Comets defeated Kalamazoo College in four sets before falling to Trine  University in three sets. Against Kalamazoo, junior Brittney Prince led all players with 16 kills and a .484 attack percentage. Junior Morgan Champion finished with 11 kills. Junior Madelyn Notenbaum dished out 25 set assists, and junior Gabrielle Mundt had 16 digs. Against Trine, Champion paced Olivet with 10 kills. Notenbaum had 20 set assists, while Mundt recorded a match-high 23 digs. Sophomore Laken Groll served four of the seven Olivet aces.


Saint Mary's (7-8, 0-1)

The Saint Mary's volleyball team fell in a tight 3-2 loss at home against Albion on Tuesday and posted a 2-2 record at the North Park Invitational over the weekend. Nicole Lukens had double-doubles in each of the five matches for the Belles. Lindsey Pelletier was named to the all-tournament team at North Park after posting a .385 attack percentage with 44 kills.
