Around the MIAA
Adrian (3-4, 0-0)
The Adrian College volleyball team split last weekend at the MIAA Preview Tournament. The Bulldogs lost to Albion and Hope on Friday and beat Finlandia and Kalamazoo to wrap up on Saturday. Sophomore Alex Tobler led the team in kills in the tournament, with 43. Sophomore Liz Susitko led the Bulldogs in assists with 80 over the weekend and sophomore Karlee Techentin's 63 digs led the Adrian defense.
Albion (5-3, 0-0)
Albion won three of four matches in the MIAA Preview Tournament, sweeping Adrian, Finlandia and Kalamazoo...Libero Monica Shuk (Milford, Mich./Mercy) collected 69 digs to surpass 1,800 for her career...Middle blocker Taylor Rosenthal (Vicksburg, Mich.) collected 11 blocks to move into third place on Albion's all-time list...Outside hitter Chloe Webber (Marshall, Mich.) recorded 37 kills and 52 digs in the event, including a double-double of 11 kills and 20 digs vs. Hope.
Alma (7-1, 0-0)
The Alma volleyball team went 3-1 at the MIAA Preview Tournament over the weekend with its only loss coming against No. 1 Calvin College. Junior outside hitter Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) led the Scots in kills with 18 on day one of the tournament while freshmen outside hitter Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and opposite Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) also had double-digit kills with 16 and 15, respectively. On day two, senior middle blocker Katie Bush (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) led Alma in kills, kill percentage and blocks and Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) set a new career-high in assists with 40 in game one, then broke it with 52 in game two.
No. 1 Calvin (7-0, 0-0)
Top-ranked Calvin went 4-0 at the MIAA Preview Tournament, defeating Alma, Trine, Saint Mary's and Olivet in straight sets to improve to 7-0 on the season. In Calvin's win over Trine Friday night, junior setter Sarah DeVries notched the first triple-double of her career, amassing 16 assists, 14 digs and 13 kills. She became the first Calvin player to record a triple-double since setter (and now current Calvin assistant coach) Megan Rietema achieved the feat in an NCAA III Tournament regional semifinal match in 2013.
No. 17 Hope (7-0, 0-0)
Twenty-eight kills in a match Saturday put senior outside hitter Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) in the Hope College volleyball record books. They also propelled the 20th-ranked Flying Dutch past Albion College in four sets during their toughest challenge in the MIAA Preview Tournament. Hope won 29-27, 25-20, 18-25, 25-13 before finishing the day and the two-day tournament at DeVos Fieldhouse with a three-set victory against Finlandia University. On Friday, Hope beat both Kalamazoo and Adrian in three sets.
Kalamazoo (1-6, 0-0)
The Kalamazoo College volleyball team competed in the MIAA Preview Tournament at Hope College last week. The Hornets split matches with Hope (16-25, 17-25, 19-25) and Finlandia (18-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20) on Friday. Sophomore Madi Goodman led the offensive attack in the win over Finlandia with 17 kills. Zoey Ammon finished the match with 27 assists and 11 digs. They finished the tournament with losses to Adrian (25-20, 11-25, 18-25, 20-25) and Albion (13-25, 9-25, 17-25).
Olivet (5-3, 0-0)
The Olivet College volleyball team had a 1-3 record at the 2018 MIAA Preview Tournament. For the four matches, junior Brittney Prince totaled 45 kills, including 19 in a four-set win over Saint Mary's. Madelyn Notenbaum had 25 kills, 76 set assists, six aces and 44 digs. Gabrielle Mundt topped the team with 56 digs.
Saint Mary's (1-4, 0-0)
The Belles opened the season with a 3-0 win at home against Manchester before falling in each of their four matches at the MIAA Preview Tournament over the weekend. Nicole Lukens is averaging 3.5 kills and 4.44 sets per set as the junior has had double-doubles in four of the team's five matches.
Trine (4-4, 0-0)
The Thunder finished another week of competition splitting the win-loss columns, going 2-2 at the MIAA Preview Tournament. Sophomore Madison Munger (Indianapolis / Franklin Central) continues to impress as she now leads the team with 92 kills.
