Hope Wins Division III National Championship

For the third time in five years, the MIAA is home to the nation's top Division III volleyball team.

MIAA co-champion Hope won its first volleyball national championship Monday afternoon by defeating Emory, Ga. in a five-set battle in Newport News, Va. The Flying Dutch won the match 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 15-8.

The Eagles forced a fifth and deciding set by rallying from a 14-7 deficit in the fourth set, but Hope opened the final set with seven consecutive points and withstood an Emory rally for the win.

Senior All-MIAA outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer recorded a match-high 22 kills to lead the Flying Dutch (34-2). Hope’s all-time leader in kills and three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association first team All-American was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player.

Senior outside hitter Amy VanderStoep totaled a career-high 19 kills and earned all-tournament honors. Junior setter Lauren Hazekamp, who totaled a career-high 58 assists, also made the all-tournament team. Senior Anna Lynch chipped in 16 kills, including the championship-clinching point.

The national championship is the third team national title for Hope (the others were in women's basketball in 1990 and 2006) and the 22nd overall team national title for the MIAA.

Calvin's Kamp Named Division III Player of the Year, Leads Seven MIAA All-America Selections

MIAA Most Valuable Player Maggie Kamp of Calvin was named Thursday the NCAA Division III Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Kamp, a junior from Palos Heights, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), is the fourth consecutive Calvin player to receive the AVCA national award. She headlines a list of seven MIAA student-athletes - all of whom will be playing in this weekend's NCAA Division III national championships - that have received All-America honors, including two first-team selections and the national Freshman of the Year.

Past NCAA Division III Players of the Year from Calvin have included Kamp's older sisters, Rebecca (2011) and Lizzie (2012). Megan Rietema, now an assistant coach for the Knights, was last year's national Player of the Year.

Calvin setter Jenna Lodewyk (top row, second from left) was named the Division III Freshman of the Year on Wednesday when the All-America team was announced. Meanwhile, Kamp and Hope senior Jenna Grasmeyer were named to the AVCA Division first team in the balloting conducted by a selection committee of coaches from around the country.

Grasmeyer (top row, center) is being honored on the first team for the third time, while Kamp (top row, left) is on the first team for the second time.

Calvin sophomore Laura Danhoff (top row, second from right) and Hope junior Lauren Hazekamp (top row, right) were second team All-America selections, while Lodewyk was named to the third team.

Calvin's Emily Crowe (second row, left) and Hope's Amy VanderStoep (second row, right) were honorable mention All-American selections.

The national Division III Player of the Year announcement came at a banquet in Newport News, Va., where MIAA co-champions Calvin and Hope will be competing for the national championship starting Friday.
