Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian will begin the indoor track and field season Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Trine Invitational.


#33 Albion

Cassie Vince owns the top time in Division III in the 3,000 meters at this point of the season. The senior and cross country All-American completed her race in 9:39.35 during the Bob Eubanks Open at Grand Valley State University. The runner-up in the race, Kelli Smith (Cornerstone University), completed her race in 10:13.07.

Alma

The track and field team finished in first place at the Jack Skoog Open, hosted by Central Michigan University, on Friday (Jan. 11). The Scots were 21 points ahead of CMU on the women's side. Senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich.) took first in the 200-meter sprint and sophomore Grace Hearth (Freeland, Mich.) won the women's 60 meter dash. In the field events, senior Lauren Kucharczyk (Livonia, Mich.) took the women's long jump.


Calvin

The Calvin women's track and field team took fifth place with a score of 44 points in the Jack Skoog Open last Friday. Senior Katie Diekema won the mile crossing the line with a time of 5:06.98. Her time currently ranks sixth nationally. Another first-place finish recorded was from senior Margaret VanWylen in the 400 meters with a time of 1:06.95. Winning the 800 meter dash was junior Sarah Ball who recorded a time of 2:31.65. Calvin claimed the top seven spots in the 3000 meters. Freshman Sadie Heeringa crossed the line with a 10:33.38. Coming in second place was junior Michelle Koetje with a 10:36.36 followed by senior Breanna Kooiman with a 11:07.08. Calvin returns to action on Saturday as the Knights compete in the GVSU Mike Lints Invitational.


Hope

Did not compete. Hope will start 2019 at the Mike Lints Open Saturday, Jan. 19.


Olivet

The Comets opened its season at the Jack Skoog Open, hosted by Central Michigan University. Freshman Lillian Albaugh broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 7-3/4 inches. The mark is No. 1 among MIAA student-athletes and No. 13 in the NCAA DIII rankings. Senior Michaela Kaliniak tied for the MIAA's top mark this winter in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10 feet, 6 inches. Sophomore Ariel Floyd notched a 46 feet, 8-3/4 inch toss in the weight throw for the top performance in the MIAA this winter. Freshman Laura Tuttle crossed the finish line in the 600-meter run at 1:55.32 for the MIAA's second-best mark.


Trine

Finished second at the Trine Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open Meet. Had two event winners in Evonne Bultemeyer (one-mile run) and Lacie Piekarski (3000-meter run).
