Around the MIAA

Adrian

The Adrian College women’s tennis team was at the Hope Invitational last weekend. Junior Samantha Cyrus went 2-2 in singles play in the “A” flight, and fellow junior Elena Bishop went 2-1 in the “C” flight.


Albion

Albion College scored victories in doubles action as it opened the season in the Hope College Invitational. Eleanor Debo and Courtney Rogers, Grace Moore and Namara Swillum and Lauren Solano and Marceline Redick all won matches for the Britons.


Alma

Did not compete.


Calvin

Calvin competed at the Hope Fall Invitational last weekend. In singles play, Leah Newhof (Caledonia Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) went 3-1 on the weekend and was the Northeast champion winning 6-0, 6-2 in the final. Maddie Brouwer (Hudsonville Mich. / Hudsonville) posted a 3-1 record in singles and went 2-1 in doubles with Newhof. In singles play, Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg) went 3-1 and Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind. / Concord High School) went 2-2. Together the two went 2-2 in doubles. Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) was 3-1 in singles play and Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) was 2-1. The pair went 2-2 in doubles play. Also, in singles play Brittney Statema (Holland Mich. / Holland Christian) was 2-2, Carrie Scofield (Pioneertown, Calif. / Yucca Valley) was 3-1 and Alexis Ganop was 2-2. Statema and Scofield went 0-2 together in doubles. Statema and Ganop went 1-0.


Hope

Junior Claire Hallock of Lakeland, Florida (Harrison Center HS) went undefeated in four singles matches at the Hope Invitational on Friday and Saturday. She also teamed with junior Amanda Bandrowski of Traverse City, Michigan (St. Francis) for a 3-0 record in the A doubles flight.


Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team competed at the Hope Invitational Friday and Saturday. Caroline Norton and Ella Knight advanced to the semifinals of the "B" Doubles draw before falling 8-3 to Johns/LaBarge (Hope). The pair then defeated Becker/Carney (Saint Mary's) 8-6 to finish in third place. Kalamazoo's Sonal Bahl and Bella Russo won the "A" doubles backdraw with two wins on Saturday.


Olivet

The Olivet College women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss to Indiana University-South Bend Sept. 16 at Lepeer Park in South Bend, Indiana.


Saint Mary's

The Belles began their season on Friday and Saturday at the Hope Invitational. Megan Davy and Monica Davy posted a 3-1 record on the weekend in the A Doubles bracket. Elizabeth Preister went a combined 6-2 in doubles and singles play.


Trine

Trine split during the week coming away with a victory against Defiance before dropping a close match to Bethel (Ind.). Freshmen are making an impact for the Thunder with Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) leading the way, remaining undefeated thus far in both No. 1 singles and doubles.
