Hope Women's Tennis Serves Up MIAA Title With Win Vs. Kalamazoo

The Hope College women's tennis team repeated as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champions for the second time in five seasons Friday by winning a first-place showdown against visiting Kalamazoo.

The 34th-ranked Flying Dutch took the match 7-2 at DeWitt Tennis Center to earn a share of their 23rd MIAA title overall and clinch the top seed in next week's league tournament.

Hope (15-4 overall, 7-0 MIAA) can claim an outright league championship with a win at Olivet on Saturday. The regular-season finale begins at 1 p.m. Kalamazoo fell to 9-10 overall and 6-1 in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutch have now been MIAA champs four times during head coach Adam Ford's tenure (2012-13, 2015-16).

Hope opened the match by sweeping doubles.

Senior Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and junior Nancy Benda of Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS) topped Sarah Woods and Sabrina Dass 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Anna Garcia of Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS) beat Maria Franco and Sonal Bahl 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Natalie Rahrig of Fort Wayne, Indiana (Bishop Luers HS) and freshman Catherine Wingrove of Okemos, Michigan (Okemos HS) defeated Alexandria Oswalt and Eloise Germic 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Garcia downed Dass 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 flight.

Junior Kate Mader of Granger, Indiana (Penn HS) claimed a 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles against Siani Johnson.

Rahrig topped Katie Clark 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

LaBarge recorded a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against Bahl. 

Hope will host a MIAA Tournament semifinal on Thursday, May 5 at 4 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
