Calvin's Van Harn Headlines MIAA Competitors at NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship

The 2018 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships concluded March 24, with four MIAA women's programs represented in the championship field.

Calvin gathered 101.5 points to place 11th overall, while Kalamazoo's deep contingent in diving scored 11 points to rank 32nd overall. Hope and Olivet also competed at the NCAA Championships, but did not advance to the evening finals.

Calvin's Abby Van Harn capped her career with an All-American swim in the 100 Free, touching fifth in 50.44. The senior standout advanced to the B Final in both the 50 Free and 200 Free, finishing 13th in the 200 (1:50.92) and tied for 14th in the 50 (23.62).

Among Calvin's top finishes were the team's All-American swims in the freestyle relays. The Knights were sixth in the 200 Free Relay, with Emily Gunderson, Rachel Mattson, Madelyn Smith, and Van Harn racing to a time of 1:34.38. In the 400 Free Relay, where Smith, Anna Serino, Mattson, and Van Harn finished seventh in the A Final with a time of 3:26.84. Calvin placed eighth in the 800 free relay, with Serino, Van Harn, Smith, and Libby Engle combining for a time of 7:30.23.

Kalamazoo's Nicki Bailey advanced to the Championship Final in 1-meter diving, posting a score of 420.70 to finish sixth in the preliminaries; Bailey then scored 392.75 in the evening session to finish eighth.

Calvin's Sarah Bradley was the Consolation Final winner in 3-meter diving, scoring 466.65 in the evening session.
