Around the MIAA

Adrian (2-4-1, 0-0)

The Adrian College women's soccer team played two matches last week, losing on Wednesday to Siena Heights and then beating Michigan-Dearborn in the home opener. The Bulldogs fell to the Saints 1-0 on a penalty in overtime last Wednesday. It's the second time the Black and Gold has lost a game in overtime on a penalty kick this year. The Bulldogs bounced back on Saturday, blanking the Wolverines, 5-0. Freshman McKenna Mahoney led the offensive charge, scoring her first two career goals in the game.


Albion (3-4-1, 0-0)

Forward Kameryn Szalay (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career as part of Albion's 5-0 victory at Manchester University last Tuesday…Midfielder Ashlyn Wetzel (Stevensville, Mich./St. Joseph) also collected her first collegiate goal at Anderson…Forward Clare Kelley (Plymouth, Mich./Ladywood) scored two goals in Albion's 4-3 loss to Capital University on Sunday…Goalkeeper Megan Bricely (Troy, Mich./Marian) collected 11 saves against Capital, her third contest with at least 11 saves this season.

Alma (2-4-0, 0-0)

The women's soccer team went 1-1, which started with a 3-0 win over Heidelberg on Friday (Sept. 14). Sophomore midfielder Makenzie Rajewski (Midland, Mich. / Midland), sophomore forward Lauren Sollestre (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Marian) and senior forward Kristina Berzkalns (Byron Center, Mich. / Grandville) all scored for Alma. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made five saves in the game and added another five in a 3-0 loss to Ohio Northern on Saturday (Sept. 15).


Calvin (4-1-1, 0-0)

The Calvin women's soccer team fell to Wheaton Sept. 12, 2-1, suffering the team's first loss of the season. Emily Van Vliet scored for Calvin in the setback. Calvin rebounded to beat Concordia Wisconsin Sept. 15, 6-1. Emily Van Vliet had her fifth goal of the season, Mackenna Nesky had her third goal of the season, and Jessie Paulson had her first two goals of the season.


No. 13 Hope (4-0-1, 0-0)

The nationally-ranked Hope College women's soccer went 1-0-1 in the week by tying third-ranked University of Chicago 1-1 on the road Wednesday and defeated Capital (Ohio) University on Saturday during its Purple Community game benefiting Van Andel Institute. Hope wore purple jerseys Saturday in honor of loved ones impacted by cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. All proceeds will benefit Van Andel Institute and help fund a summer internship for a Hope College student to perform research in a Van Andel Institute laboratory. Junior Megan Bigelow of Flushing, Michigan (Flushing) recorded her first multi-goal game with the Flying Dutch against Capital.


Kalamazoo (4-2-1, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team ended the week with a 5-2 victory over Concorida Chicago and a 0-0 draw with Wooster. Freshman Kai Ketola led the Hornets in game one with two goals in the win over the Cougars. Joy Hunziker added three points of her own with one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalie Hannah Wolfe continued her impressive play this season with 11 saves in the draw with Wooster.


Olivet (3-2-2, 0-0)

The Olivet College women's soccer team had a 1-1-1 record last week. The Comets defeated Heidelberg (Ohio) University, 3-1, behind goals by three different players. Olivet then lost 2-0 to Elmhurst (Ill.) College. The Comets bounced back to tie Lawrence Tech, 1-1. Grace White scored the goal against the Blue Devils.


Saint Mary's (3-4-0, 0-0)

The Belles bounced back from a 4-0 loss against Hanover with wins over Manchester and Concordia University Wisconsin. Rose Stackhouse matched the school record for goals in a game with four while also picking up an assist against Manchester. Lexi Trombly had a brace with two goals on four shots against CUW. Delaney Rohlman earned both goalkeeping wins while saving 90.9% of the shots on goal she faced.


Trine (3-4-0, 0-0)

Trine University dropped a close match to Rose-Hulman in their lone contest of the week by the score of 1-0. Despite her second loss, freshman Jillian Rejczyk (Wauconda, Ill. / Wauconda) continues to impress in her duties as keeper.
