Around the MIAA

Adrian (0-2, 0-0)

The Adrian College women's soccer team started its season on Friday, Aug. 31 at Wooster and fell by a score of 3-1. The Bulldogs were back in action the next day and lost on the road to Grove City in double overtime. The two games are part of a five-game non-conference road trip for the Black and Gold.


Albion (2-0, 0-0)

Albion is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2014. Emily Brittain scored the only goal and goalkeeper Megan Bricely made some important saves as Albion gained a 1-0 result at Central (Ohio) College last Saturday. Riley Burnette and Samantha LaRocca scored second half goals to lift the Britons to the victory at Coe (Iowa) College last Sunday.

Alma (0-2, 0-0)

The women's soccer team fell in both its matches over the weekend. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) is tied for third in the conference in saves with eight after two games.


Calvin (2-0, 0-0)

Calvin handed first-year head coach Emily Ottenhoff a pair of victories in her weekend debut. The Knights handed Carthage a 4-1 defeat on Friday and came back with a 1-0 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday. In the win over Carthage, senior Emily Van Vliet notched the first hat-trick performance of her career. Senior Mackenna Nesky also scored for the Knights. Nesky then scored the only goal of the game Saturday against MSOE. Her goal came with just 11 seconds left in the first half. Calvin travels to the Pacific Northwest this weekend for games against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.


Hope (2-0, 0-0)

The Hope College women's soccer team is holders of a 2-0 record after defeating #5 Ohio Northern University, 1-0, in overtime on Saturday in Bloomington, Illinois. Hope also beat host and #23 Illinois Wesleyan University, 2-1, on Friday. Senior Eliza Beird of Holland, Michigan (Black River) recorded two assists for the Flying Dutch, while sophomore Audrey White of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) scored the winning goal against Ohio Northern.


Kalamazoo (1-1, 0-0)

The Kalamazoo College women’s soccer team began the season with a 3-1 win over MSOE Aug. 31. Second half goals by Larkin O’Gorman, Libby Munoz and Kai Ketola gave the Hornets the come-from-behind win. The following day, the Hornets were beaten by Carthage, 1-0. Junior goalie Hannah Wolfe had an impressive week with eight saves in the first two matches of the season.


Olivet (1-0, 0-0)

Senior Emma Essen netted a hat trick to lead the Olivet College women's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout victory over Greenville (Ill.) University in its season-opener Sept. 1 at Francis Field in Greenville, Illinois. The Comets have now won six straight season-opening contests and gave first-year head coach Doug Carter his first victory at Olivet.


Saint Mary's (0-2, 0-0)

The Belles opened up the 2018 season with a 3-0 setback at IU East and a 3-2 loss at Earlham over the holiday weekend. Rose Stackhouse registered both goals for Saint Mary's against Earlham.


Trine (1-1, 0-0)

Trine began their 2018 season with a 2-0 victory over Earlham College on Saturday. Junior Kristen Reece (Indianapolis / Roncalli) and freshman Kayla Dennewitz (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) each notched their first goals of the season in the victory. Trine would finish the weekend with a 1-1 record dropping a double overtime thriller to Indiana University – East on Sunday.
