OLIVET, Mich. – Doug Carter has been named head women’s soccer coach at Olivet College, according to an announcement by Ryan Shockey, director of athletics. Carter replaces Sarah Maracani who left the college to become the head women’s soccer coach at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University.

"I am thrilled to welcome Doug to the Comet athletic staff," said Shockey. "He brings a great coaching resume to the program, and I look forward to watching him continue the success our women’s soccer team had last year."

Carter comes to Olivet after a successful coaching career at Northwood University in Midland. He was the head coach for the men’s program from 2001-17, while also leading the women’s team from 1998-2010. In 29 combined years, the Wolves posted a 239-246-31 record.

On the men’s side, Carter had a 148-119-20 record. He was named the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year in 2003 and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Coach of the Year in 2004. Carter guided the program to the GLIAC Tournament championship match in 2007 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

Most recently, the Wolves won the GLIAC championship in 2015 and 2017, and the GLIAC Tournament championship in 2014 and 2015. The 2014 campaign saw Northwood win the GLIAC Tournament with a 1-0 win over Saginaw Valley State University. The Wolves earned the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region and hosted an NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Northwood posted a 91-127-11 record during Carter’s tenure as the women’s coach. He mentored the only GLIAC Player of the Year in program history (Amanda Watson, 2010) and Freshman of the Year (Margaret Humiecki, 1999).

Carter played collegiate soccer for the University of Surrey in England. He started all three seasons and was team captain for two of those campaigns. He also played 11 seasons for the Civil Service Football Club in London.

In 1992, Carter graduated from the University of Surrey with a bachelor’s of science degree in psychology and sports studies. He and his wife, Kelly, have two sons, Liam and Ethan.
