Hope Women's Soccer Plays Calvin To Rare Scoreless Draw

The Hope College women's soccer team remained tied for first place in the MIAA standings after playing to a scoreless tie at Calvin on Saturday.

The 16th-ranked Flying Dutch are now 10-1-1 overall and finished the first half of league play at 7-0-1. They share first place with Calvin.

Sophomore goalie Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett HS), made six saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

It was the second time in 47 Hope-Calvin matches the two teams played to a 0-0 draw. The last time was 1993.

Theis moved into a fourth-place tie among Hope's all-time single-season leaders with Megan Altieri (2012) and Holly Nestle (2004). The school record is 15 by Nestle in 2003.

Hope held off Calvin despite being outshot 6-0 during two 10-minute overtime periods. The Flying Dutch held a 10-6 advantage in shots during regulation.

Hope returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Kalamazoo.
