Kalamazoo edges Albion in women's soccer

ALBION, Mich. – Winning battles and races to the ball has always been the mantra for the Albion College women's soccer team during Eric Scott's tenure as head coach.

The Britons won the battles and races Tuesday, however, Madeleine Chilcote scored a fortunate goal in the 81st minute to lift Kalamazoo College to a 1-0 victory in the clash of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association squads.

"We didn't take our chances in the first half, and when you don't, you get beat," Scott said. "We weren't our best in the final third. We needed one more pass.

"I was happy with the effort," Scott added.

Kalamazoo goalkeeper Grace Smith collected four saves, but it was the manner in which she came decisively off her line that helped her earn her fourth shutout of the season. Albion tried to get its forwards free for breakaway opportunities, but Smith limited those chances.

Despite Smith's fine play, Albion finished with a 12-8 edge in shots. Forwards Jenna Urso and Domenique Sarnecky combined for five shots. Alyssa Brooks also tried two shots.

Albion (5-5 overall and 3-4 against MIAA rivals) plays at home again on Saturday against Adrian College. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Alumni Field.
