Around the MIAA
Adrian (5-9, 1-5)
Sha'Trice Graves continues to lead the nation with 3.69 blocks per game…Her 49 blocked shots this season rank third on the Adrian all-time list (needing two to move into second place and surpass Ann Terpstra, 50 in 1999-20000) and she is also third on the school's career chart with 79…Ashley Morris is the Bulldogs active career leader in points (782), rebounds (344), assists (162) and steals (60)….As a team, Adrian is ranked 38th in NCAA Division III with 30 defensive rebounds per game…Morris has entered the top-15 on the school’s all-time assist rankings at No. 15…Alivia Kondrath ranks fourth in MIAA three-point field goal percentage with .380…the Bulldogs will have their hands full on Wednesday when they travel to Angola, Ind., to face nationally No. 11-ranked Trine.
Albion (11-2, 4-1)
Alma (8-7, 3-3)
The Scots kicked off 2019 with two conference wins as they defeated Kalamazoo College, 65-48, on the road on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Sophomore forward Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich.) scored a career-high 18 points on nine of 12 shooting. Calvin College then came to Art Smith Arena Saturday (Jan. 5) and Alma came out as the victors by a score of 84-73. The Scots put up 50 on the scoreboard in the first half while freshman guard Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich.) led the way with a career-high 24 on the six threes. The Scots hold a record of 8-7 overall and 3-3 in MIAA play.
Calvin (8-6, 3-2)
Calvin split a pair of conference games on the road last week, defeating Adrian 59-51 on Wednesday and falling to Alma on Saturday 84-73. In the win over Adrian, freshman Gabby Timmer had 21 points and 16 rebounds while senior Rachel Warners added 10 points off the bench. In Saturday's loss at Alma, Calvin trailed 50-29 at halftime but closed within eight points in the third quarter before falling back in the fourth quarter. Junior Kara Minderhoud led Calvin in defeat with 16 points with Timmer contributing 13 points and freshman Abbie Cooley 10 points. Calvin will travel to Albion on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. conference contest and will then host rival Hope on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
No. 7/9 Hope (12-2, 4-1)
Kalamazoo (0-13, 0-5)
The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team was defeated in games with Alma (65-48) and Hope (96-30) this week. Guards Amanda Moss and Kaytlyn Tidey continue to set the pace for the Hornets offensively. Moss collected 10 points against Alma and added 14 in the loss to Hope. Freshman Tidey scored 26 total points on the week. Kalamazoo will travel to Saint Mary's on Wednesday before hosting Olivet Saturday.
Olivet (5-9, 1-5)
The Olivet College women's basketball team lost two home MIAA games last week -- 67-57 vs. Saint Mary's and 82-42 vs. Trine. Against Saint Mary's, Tammy Lee scored a team-high 19 points. Shawnee Dame joined her in double figures with 11 points. Amari Brown and Fayth Talbert each grabbed five rebounds. Against Trine, Dame led Olivet with 13 points and shared team-high honors with six rebounds. Brown also grabbed six rebounds. Talbert contributed 10 points.
Saint Mary's (6-8, 3-2)
In their lone game of the week, the Belles held off host Olivet for a 67-57 win to ring in the new year. Saint Mary's out-scored the Comets 12-6 over the final 4:01 of play to secure the win. Giavanna Paradiso led all players with 23 points and shared game-high honors with eight rebounds. Bella Dugas chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds. Jade Mosier tallied nine points, and Erin Maloney broke the 300 career assist plateau with five dimes to go along with five points and two steals.
