Around the MIAA

Adrian (7-11, 3-6)

Adrian has limited opponents to just a 39.5 scoring average during its two-game winning streak which followed a five-game skid…the Bulldogs look to continue their winning ways and move up the MIAA standings this week when they host Saint Mary's on Wednesday and travel Calvin on Saturday…senior Ashley Morris (14.1 ppg), and juniors Alivia Kondrath (8.4), Emily Somerville (8.3) are Adrian's top scorers…Morris shoots 45.2 FG% for 5th in the MIAA…sophomore Sha'Trice Graves sees her six-week reign atop the NCAA Division III blocked shots list end with 59 blocked shots, which is second in Bulldogs single-season history (Katelyn Proy from Hilbert College has 60)…AC top rebounders: Graves (8.1 rpg, 2nd in MIAA), Morris (5.3), sophomore Rachel Bucher (5.2), freshman Addison Bergman (3.8) and senior Katie Crawford (3.4)…the defense has limited opponent to just a .257 field goal percentage (52-202) in the last three contests…Morris has tied with Brigitte Zavithsanos (2013-17) for 12th place on the Bulldogs all-time assists chart with 173 and needs one rebound to enter the Top-15 in rebounds.


Albion (14-3, 7-2)

Olivet is the first Division III team to score less than 50 points against Albion this season. Great Lakes Christian (38) has the lowest output by an Albion opponent this season…Rain Hinton (Fort Wayne, Ind.) averaged 13 points and 7 ½ rounds in MIAA games at Trine and Olivet last week…Brooke Schutte (Turner, Mich.) scored 10 at Olivet, her first time scoring in double figures against a MIAA rival so far this season…Jami Hubbard (Reading, Mich.) scored eight rebounds in each game last week.

Alma (8-10, 3-6)

The Scots went to No. 10 Trine University Saturday (Jan. 19) and fell, 77-41, to the nationally-ranked Thunder. Sophomore forward Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio) scored a season-high 12 points and grabbed a game-high six rebounds in the loss. Alma still holds onto the final playoff spot in the MIAA with seven games remaining while Trine is in first place with an undefeated conference record.


Calvin (9-9, 4-5)

Calvin split a pair of games last week, defeating Kalamazoo on the road 82-48 on Wednesday and then falling to Saint Mary's at home on Saturday 76-69. In the win at Kalamazoo, The Knights led 43-20 at halftime. Mady Vander Zwaag led Calvin in the win with 14 points while Stephanie Coors had 13 and Gabby Timmer 11. The Knights then dropped just their second-ever game at Van Noord Arena against Saint Mary's as the host Belles bumped the Knights into fifth place in the conference standings. Calvin led 55-54 after three quarters of play but the visiting Belles outscored the Knights 22-14 over the final quarter of play. Gabby Timmer had 22 points and nine boards for the Knights. Vander Zwaag had 13 and Becca Richards 10. Saint Mary's outboarded Calvin 36-29 and hit 8 of 17 from three-point range in the win. Timmer continues to lead the MIAA in scoring, averaging 18.3 points a game in conference play. Calvin will travel to Trine on Wednesday and then host Adrian Saturday afternoon.


No. 7/9 Hope (15-2, 7-1)

The nationally ranked Hope College women's basketball team defeated Saint Mary's 93-44 on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse in its only game last week. The Flying Dutch improved to 15-2 overall, 7-1 in MIAA play. Senior forward Francesca Buchanan (Grant, Mich.) recorded a team-high 12 points with perfect shooting from the field (4-4) and free-throw line (2-2). She doubled her career 3-point total with two during the first half. Sophomore point guard Lauren Newman (Flushing, Mich.) chipped in 11 points, seven of which came during the first quarter.

Kalamazoo (0-17, 0-9)

Kalamazoo fell to Calvin (82-48) and Adrian (75-39) this week. Guards Kaytlyn Tidey and Darby Scott led Kalamazoo with 12 and 10 points respectively in Wednesday's contest with the Knights. Georgie Andrews tallied her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Adrian. Andrews' 7.1 rebounds per game is good for fifth in the MIAA. Kalamazoo will take a break from MIAA play as it hosts Finlandia on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. before traveling to Alma on Saturday.


Olivet (6-12, 2-7)

Olivet lost a pair of MIAA games last week -- 62-40 against Adrian and 64-43 against Albion. Against Adrian, Junior Kim Buie scored a team-best seven points. Seniors Shawnee Dame and Shannon Dingman, and junior Tammy Lee each had six points. Sophomore Fayth Talbert grabbed a team-best six rebounds. Against Albion, sophomore Daitriona Bonds came off the bench to score a team-high nine points. Talbert grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. In the game against Adrian, the Comets welcomed Special Olympics athlete Jordie Reynolds to the team. Reynolds was introduced to the fans before the game and sat on the Olivet bench during the game.


Saint Mary's (8-10, 5-4)

The Belles bounced back from a 93-44 loss at No. 7 Hope on Wednesday by claiming a 76-69 win at Calvin on Saturday. Erin Maloney had her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against the Flying Dutch. On Saturday, Jade Mosier posted a season-high and game-best 31 points after connecting on 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) three-pointers and 13-of-20 (65.0 percent) of her shots from the floor as the Belles took their first win at Calvin since January 2009.


No. 10/10 Trine (16-2, 9-0)

Trine won both games during the week against Albion (59-42) and Alma (77-41). Brandi Dawson led the team in scoring in both games with 19 points against Albion and 13 points against Alma to average 16.0 points per game for the week.
