Trine Wins First-Ever MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament Title

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Trine Thunder captured their first-ever MIAA women's basketball tournament title Saturday evening on their home court to earn the MIAA's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Trailing 24-22 at the half, Trine (24-2) held Calvin to just 1-of-13 shooting in the third quarter to take a seven-point advantage heading into the final stanza as the Thunder held off the Knights 49-42 to win their first-ever MIAA women's basketball tournament championship.

Hayley Martin led the Thunder with team-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Brandi Dawson added 11 points in the winning cause. Trine went 14-of-15 from the free throw line on the night, and committed just nine turnovers in the game while coming up with nine steals on the defensive end.

Calvin (22-5) was led by Anna Timmer's game-bests of 16 points and 12 rebounds. For the game, the Knights shot 33.3 percent from the field and were 0-for-6 from three-point range.

The win was the 10th in a row for the Thunder, which entered the week ranked #18 nationally.

Trine, along with Hope and Calvin, will await their NCAA Tournament fates when the NCAA announces their tournament selections Monday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m. live on ncaa.com.
