Fourth quarter drought stops Britons

ALBION, Mich. – Illinois Wesleyan's full-court defense got Albion to play quicker than in would have liked, and the Britons failed to score in a critical stretch in the fourth quarter in a 57-54 loss on the second day of a tip-off classic at Kresge Gymnasium.

Illinois Wesleyan led 55-48 on Rebekah Ehresman's basket with five minutes remaining. The Titans scored just two points – on free throws by Ehresman with eight seconds left – but the Britons could not cut into the deficit with a stretch when they missed four shots and committed a turnover.

Jay Bard ended Albion's scoring drought when she knocked down a jumper, and Erin Nelson scored on Albion's next possession after Darian Payne grabbed on offensive rebound with 30 seconds left.

"We played so hard and with passion and intensity," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We never quit. I thought we would come back and win."

Payne produced her second double-double of the season (14 points and 16 rebounds) to earn her all-classic award. Bard produced 11 points off the bench and Nelson finished with 10.

Ehresman led all players with 19 points.

Albion will go in search of its first victory of the season Tuesday when it travels to Dominican (Ill.) University for a non-league game.
