Hope Women's Basketball Gives Coach Brian Morehouse His 500th Career Win

A self-described whale of a ride brought Brian Morehouse 500 career wins as head coach of the Hope women’s basketball team on Saturday.

The fourth-ranked and unbeaten Flying Dutch gave Morehouse another milestone victory with a 95-58 win against Saint Mary’s on Senior Day at DeVos Fieldhouse. As a result, Morehouse now boasts a record of 500-76 in 20 seasons as head coach.

“There’s no better place than Hope. There’s no better than place that I’d rather do this,” Morehouse told an enthused DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,130 during a post-game ceremony honoring him. “I have great players. I get way too much of the credit honestly.”

The feat capped an afternoon celebration with Morehouse’s current and past players. His 2006 national championship team was recognized at halftime for the tenth anniversary of its accomplishment.

The 2015-16 Flying Dutch raised their record to 21-0 overall and 13-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action with a dominant performance from the opening tip.

Hope jumped to a 21-4 lead during the first quarter by matching its best defensive performance in a quarter this season. It was the third time the Flying Dutch held an opponent to four points in a quarter this season.

Senior guard Autumn Anderson of Dorr, scored a career-high 19 points to lead Hope, while classmate Maura McAfee of Midland netted 16 points.

Junior guard Angelique Gaddy of Caledonia added 11 points as all 14 Hope players scored against Saint Mary’s.

Hope can clinch a share of its 15th MIAA championship — the 13th under Morehouse’s guidance — on Saturday at home against Albion.
