Hope Wins Thrice to Earn MIAA Softball Tournament Championship

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Hope softball team, facing elimination throughout Saturday, won three times to win the 2018 MIAA Softball Tournament championship. After eliminating Calvin in the morning contest, Hope defeated Saint Mary's twice to win the double-elimination tournament.

The 2018 NCAA Division III Softball selection show is slated for Monday, May 7 at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Game 5: Hope 5, Calvin 1

In a pitchers' duel between two of the top hurlers of the MIAA, Hope's Sydney Jones struck out 14 of 27 batters faced in holding Calvin to two hits on the way to Hope's 5-1 win. Calvin's Anna Gernant finished with six strikeouts in the setback.

Game 6: Hope 6, Saint Mary's 2

Hope's Jo Cook went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored while teammate Katie Singer blasted a game-clinching three-run home run in the seventh inning to give Saint Mary's their first loss of the tournament, 6-2. Singer also earned the win, throwing a complete game with six strikeouts.

Game 7: Hope 4, Saint Mary's 2

Hope's Sydney Jones came back with an eight-strikeout effort in the day's final game, scattering four hits in the Flying Dutch's 4-2 win. Savannah Dixon went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while teammate Hayley Reitsma also was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run.
