MIAA Softball Week #5 Wrap-Up

• Calvin started their trip to Florida with two victories March 18, defeating Allegheny, 5-1, and Ohio Wesleyan, 14-13. Against Ohio Wesleyan, the Knights owned a 10-2 lead through three before an 11-run fourth by Ohio Wesleyan put Calvin in a hole. The Knights responded with a four-run sixth to tally the win; Rachel Borden (So., OF, Edwardsburg, Mich.) went 4-for-4 with two runs to aid in the offense. In the win over Allegheny, Maddie DeGroot (So., INF, Hudsonville, Mich.) was stellar in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.

• Hope went 3-1 in the start of their 2017 season, including a pair of shutouts. Sydney Jones (Jr., P, South Lyon, Mich.) fired a one-hitter in Hope's 6-0 win over Buena Vista March 18. It improved on Jones' two-hit shutout against Lake Forest March 17.

• A 4-2 streak started Kalamazoo's trip in Florida, including back-to-back shutout wins over Mass.-Boston March 16 and Becker March 17. During the six-game span, Hayleigh Alamo (So., C/3B, Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 7-for-16 with four runs, five RBI and three doubles.

• Olivet wrapped up their Florida trip with wins in five of their last six games to improve to .500 on the year. In Olivet's win over Norwich March 16, Nikole Kern (So., OF, Liberty Center, Ohio) was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI to aid in the offense.

• Saint Mary's added two wins to their season total last week, including a 10-0 5-inning win over UMass-Boston March 14. Zoe Bruni (So., P, Lockport, Ill.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the win.

• Trine finished a 10-0 week with an exclamation point against No. 4 Luther March 18, with Catherine Porter's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning giving the Thunder a 3-1 walk-off victory. It was the second win for Trine against a Top 10 opponent on the week, complementing a 3-1 victory over No. 6 Messiah March 16 where the Thunder gave up just two hits. Over the final 10 games of the trip, Kaylee Fox (Jr., IF/ Vermillion, Ohio) batted 10-for-31 with 11 runs scored, six home runs and five walks.
