Calvin Men, Women Win Great Lakes Cross Country Regional

The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams each automatically qualified for next weekend's NCAA Cross Country Championship with their first-place finishes at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Saturday, hosted by Hope.

The Calvin men were led by a second-place finish from Jordan Kramer (Sr., Pewaukee, Wis.), who ran the 8K course in 24:51.1; Kramer was just seven seconds off race winner Dan Cheung of Allegheny. Although Kramer was the lone MIAA runner in the top 10, Calvin's depth resulted in a team score of 63; all five scorers were in the top 20. Mark DeJong (Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) crossed in 11th place for the Knights.

On the women's side, Hope's Erin Herrmann (Sr., Wheaton, Ill.) won the 6K race, crossing the finish line in 21:10.9 to beat second-place by 19 seconds and third-place finisher, Albion's Jessica Shaw (Sr., Allegan, Mich.), by 31 seconds. The MIAA had five student-athletes finish in the top 11; along with Herrmann and Shaw, Alma's Kaitlyn Arnold (Sr., Jackson, Mich.) finished sixth in 21:48.8, while Calvin's Lauren Strohbehn (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) and Johanna Admiraal (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) placed 10th and 11th, respectively, to lead Calvin's first-place effort.

Calvin benefitted from its depth, as all five racers crossed the finish line in the top 35 to give the Knights 90 team points, beating second-place Allegheny (120) and third-place Hope (128).

Teams and individuals await the NCAA Championship field release Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. on ncaa.com. Sixteen teams will automatically qualify (two per region from the regional championships) and 16 at-large teams. Individually, 56 individuals per gender automatically qualify, with seven selected from each regional.

The NCAA Championship will be held Saturday, Nov. 19 at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The women's 6K race will begin at 11 a.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at noon ET.
