Ten MIAA Men’s Track & Field Athletes Qualify For NCAA Outdoor Nationals

Ten Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s track & field athletes have qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Waverly, Iowa.

Wartburg College is hosting the three-day event that runs Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28.

Hope is sending five to nationals, including the 11th-seeded 4x100-meter relay of senior Dion Goliday of Muskegon, Boone Marois of Traverse City, Matt Pelyhes of Augusta, and freshman Justin Freeman of Holland. The relay clocked a qualifying time of 41.33 seconds. 

Junior Nicholas Salomon of Troy is ranked 20th in the 800-meter run. Salomon and his teammates are all making their first trips to outdoor nationals.

MIAA champion Calvin will have three competitors at nationals: junior Zach Nowicki of Comstock Park, sophomore Andrew Philipose of Mount Prospect, Illinois, and sophomore Ethan Valentine of Mason, Ohio.

Valentine is seeded second in the 400 meters with a qualifying effort of 47.32 seconds. This is his second NCAA Championship appearance for the MIAA’s 2016 champion in the event. He was an All-American last season with a fifth-place finish at outdoor nationals.

Philipose ranks 12th in the 10,000 meters. This is his first trip to outdoor nationals.

Nowicki is seeded 16th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a run of 9:08.20. This is his first race at outdoor nationals.

Albion senior Justin Meredith of Detroit is ranked 13th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.64 seconds. The MIAA champion in the event will make his second appearance at outdoor nationals. He competed in the 100 and 200-meter events in 2014.

Adrian senior Jordan Simon of Jackson is seeded 19th in the discus throw with a toss of 48.97 meters (160 feet, 7 inches). This is his first trip to outdoor nationals.
