Kalamazoo's Branden Metzler concluded his senior campaign Friday with a semifinal appearance at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Metzler started his tournament run with a 6-3, 6-1 win over CMS' Glenn Hull. In Thursday's round of 16, Metzler outlasted MIT's Tyler Barr, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In the quarterfinals against Bowdoin's Grant Urken, Metzler took the first set 6-4, but Urken battled back to even the match in the second set, 6-2. In the decisive third, Metzler broke Urken's serve late and then answered by holding serve to close the match, 7-5.
Metzler was defeated in the semifinals by No. 1 seed Lubomir Cuba of Middlebury, 6-2, 6-2.
By advancing to the quarterfinal round, Metzler earned All-America status for the second consecutive season. He finished his singles season with a record of 27-2.
