Hope Men's Tennis Edges Adrian For Spot In MIAA Tournament Final

The back of the Hope College men's tennis team lineup delivered in a big way on Thursday in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

The second-seeded Flying Dutchmen won the fourth, fifth and sixth singles flights to claim a 5-4 semifinal win against third-seeded Adrian on Thursday at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.

Hope (8-11 overall) earn a spot in Friday's 4 p.m. final at top-seeded Kalamazoo. It is the Flying Dutchmen's second title game appearance in three years.

Junior Sam Kreps of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS) earned the fifth and decisive point at No. 6 singles by defeating Jon Rhind 6-4, 6-3.

Moments earlier, freshman Justin Folkert of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton HS) evened the score at 4-4 with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Jeff Sophiea.

Freshman Andrew Klein of Augusta, Michigan (Kalamazoo Christian HS) gave Hope its first point at singles by topping Mitchel Bulger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

In doubles, Hope won two flights.

Freshmen Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and Christian Rhoades of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) scored an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Sophiea and Rhind.

Kreps and Folkert teamed up at No. 3 doubles for an 8-4 win against Bulger and Brandon Brom.

Hope is now 8-10 all-time in MIAA Tournament matches.

Kalamazoo beat Calvin 5-0 in Friday's other semifinal.
