Around the MIAA

Albion

Jake Huttenlocher (Shelby Township, Mich.) won the breaststroke events, the 400-yard individual medley and he was part of the winning 200 medley relay to start the meet as Albion defeated Wabash in a non-league dual meet last Saturday… Nate Kozycki (Grand Rapids, Mich.), also a member of the medley relay, took first place in the butterfly events…Mac Robertson (Zeeland, Mich.) won the distance freestyle events, Jake Burris (Chelsea, Mich.) took first place in both diving events, and Ian Moran (Adrian) was a winner in the 100 backstroke and the medley relay.


Alma

Alma competed at Olivet Jan. 19, falling 116-77. Senior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich.) was a two-time winner for the Scots.


No. 11 Calvin

Calvin defeated Rose-Hulman 177-110 in a dual meet last Saturday at the Venema Aquatic Center. Calvin had three individuals that were double-winners. Junior Tim Randall was a winner in the 200 freestyle (1:46.65) and 100 freestyle (48.07). Senior Ben Holstege won the 100 backstroke (49.83) and 100 butterfly (51.13). Senior Skyler Fish claimed victory in the 100 breaststroke (59.09) and 200 backstroke (1:59.65). The Knights return to action next Saturday with half of the roster competing in a dual meet at Olivet and the other half competing in a triangular with Chicago and DePauw.


Hope

Three individuals won multiple events for the Hope College men's swimming and diving team on Saturday and led the Flying Dutchmen to a MIAA dual meet victory over Kalamazoo College. Hope defeated the Hornets, 156-144, in Kalamazoo on victories in nine events. Sophomore Daniel Keith was victorious in three events, winning the 100 backstroke in 53.54, the 200 backstroke in 1:58.12, and 100 butterfly in 51.34. Junior Daniel Clyde swam to two wins in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.11 and in the 100 freestyle with a 49.01. Grant Williams won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. The sophomore took the three-meter victory with a score of 293.90 points while his score of 313.95 points on the one-meter board set a new Hope dual-meet record. Williams broke Jean-Luc Miralda's one-meter dual score of 308.50 set in 2016.


Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo College men's swimming and diving team lost 156-144 to Hope in the final meet inside the current Kalamazoo College Natatorium. Matt Howrey led Kalamazoo with three wins in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.33), 200 breaststroke (2:14.37), and 400 IM (4:17.46). Grant Anger (1:02.26 in 100 breaststroke), Sharif Shaker (1:59.62 in 200 butterfly), Grant Stille (:22.27 in 50 freestyle), and the 200 medley relay team (Shaker, Anger, Orwin, Stille) were all winners, as well. The swimming and diving teams are back in action next Saturday, Jan. 26 at Alma.


Olivet

The Olivet College men's swimming & diving team defeated Alma, 116-77, in its only competition last week. Freshman Brandon Burks led a Comet 1-2 finish in the 50-yard freestyle at 24.40 seconds and 100-yard backstroke at 1:01.46. Sophomore Patrick Gault won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:31.62. Junior Eric Wood captured the 100-yard freestyle in 50.64 seconds and 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.61. Freshman Zachary Knott touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.37. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Zach Meharg, sophomore Kolton Epplett, Knott and Wood claimed a first-place time of 3:33.86. Junior Dalton Miner was first on both diving boards, tallying 278.70 points on the one-meter and 243.00 points on the three-meter. The total on the one-meter ranks second all-time at Olivet for a six-dive program, and is also an NCAA regional qualifying cut. The total on the three-meter was a personal-best.
